Big Brother
I have a small leak - its more of a weep, on the top of my radiator. This is the type of rad fitted to the twin cam and early Sevens (lotus and Caterham) The leak is where the top "can" is brazed onto the main body of the rad. The water is coming up through the line of braze in the channel that surrounds the "can". I tried adding some radweld but this made no difference. I thought with a small leak like this it would work OK Has anybody got any ideas on how to fix this before the weekend (Stoneleigh!) I have thought of using plumbers solder to run into the line of braze. Also considering chemical metal or Araldite. Anyonw tried this - or have any ideas? Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more! STEVE GILBERT
I had this type of rad in my 85 car, I did solder it up on the top joint with a massive copper soldering iron that you heat with a blowlamp (like you had at school?) and this has held until recently for the current owner. You might struggle to lay hour hands on one in time though See My Zetec Power 7(soon to be sold :0( ) Here
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted April 28, 2003 Area Representative Share Posted April 28, 2003 Steve, I tried rad weld in mine for a small seep but it didn't work. So after a couple of attempts messing around I took it into a local radiator repair place and he welded the corner for a tenner - just where it catches the nose cone and must have worn the corner thin. All sorted and you hardly notice the repair. Took a couple of hours or so It might save you messing around and problems esp. if the queues to get in are as bad as last year... philwaters
Hi Steve, If all else fails then a trip to Bagshot Radiators might be worth a go. They have repaired my radiator twice now and do a great job and fast turn around. These have been holes in the main area so they may not be able to save it, but worth asking. Phil Waters You mean you can drive these? I thought it was just there to polish 😬
Big Brother
Phil, I was told they had shut down (or moved) ☹️ Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more! Remember - an amateur built the Ark - It took professionals to build the Titanic!
Super_Rich_Bernie
Try epoxi putty - DT sell it - for a temporary repair to get you to Stoneleigh. It filled a corrosion hole in a water pump for me. Lasted too, since I didn't get around to repairing properly. Jonathan (ex-bodger)
Big Brother
Just tried Bars leak along with epoxi-putty. Water still pi55ing out Looks like the "can" (header) part of the rad has a split in it. Its on a corner where the metal has been pressed into shape. Time for a new rad if I cannot find anywhere local Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more! Remember - an amateur built the Ark - It took professionals to build the Titanic!
