Grease!

Colin Grundy

Recommended Posts

Only had the car back from its SVA for 3 days and Ive noticed what I thought was oil from the diff breather over the de dion tube. On closer inspection its grease coming from the near side castelated nut where the drive shaft slides into the diff. Has this been squeezed out when Caterham torqued the driveshafts nuts up or is it something more sinister do you think?

*confused*

if it's actually grease (not diff oil), then the only place it can come from is the drive shaft CV joint. It must be leaking from the gaitor. It's either split, nicked (not as in stolen) or the clip wasn't put on properly.

Check the condition of the gaitor and see if you can see where it is coming from.

Colin,

I had the same thing on my car. The inner CV joint has a rubber gaiter on one end which is clipped onto a thin steel sleeve (or "pot") that is then crimped over the inner end. On my car, this "pot" was loose and the grease from the CV joint that was leaking. Caterham sent a replacement drive shaft that I fitted myself.
