Sigma SV, Ford Gearbox, Oil Change...

Recommended Posts

Morning All,

I have done my very best searching previous threads but I can't find one that covers the Ford Gearbox in the SV chassis.....2008 Factory built car.

Has anyone checked oil level or changed oil with this set up?

Any hints or tips please?

It wasn’t expected that the oil in a Type 9 gearbox would be changed, so there’s no drain plug by design.

Some specialists have fitted a plug to the sump (due to proximity of a swarf-attracting magnet, it’s not recommended in situ) but as standard, if you want to change your oil, it’s by sucking the old stuff out through the fill plug.

On the SV, there is a chassis cross-member adjacent to the fill plug so that’s all easier said than done!

because presumptive text thought there’d be a dwarf-attracting magnet!

And if I just wanted to check the level in it.....is it just checking its filled to the top?

(I have a leak and just want to check the gearbox oil level isn't low)

Brim to the filling hole, not to the top.

PS: Mine being overfilled was a contributing factor to the Infamous Ratchet Spanner Episode.

it’s filled to the level of the plug - ie put oil in until it comes out (over your arm)!

There should also be something describing how some have manufactured a dip stick type affair in the top of the ‘box.  @Guy Lowe, from memory, did…

Strange thing is, mine has a drain plug. Retro fitted ?

Hi,

That looks as if it's been retro fitted alright, I fitted my drain plug there. At various times quite a bit of info comes up about tapping the gear box. Pretty well always in other make forums who also use the type 9. Can also be placed in the aluminium sandwich plate between the box and the tail piece. It wasn't a difficult fit even in situ and does make it a lot easier to drain the oil.

All I'd say is be very careful tightening it up, I was surprised how thin the cast iron is there!
