Given the originals have done 20yrs/40k with minimal maintenance I’m only going to upgrade if it works out not much more than replacement, which doesn’t look likely!

By minimal maintenance do you mean stripping, cleaning & re greasing every four years IAW Caterham's recommendation ?  On the old style stepped stub axles failure to do so often ends in a seized bearing causing the axle to fail at the weakest point. Usually caused by no grease having exited via the felt seal.

This now has me wondering when my 2002 hubs had a service ...... and i'm off out in 10 minutes, cross your fingers for me & is their somewhere with details of what you need to do / a Haynes manual i can steal the instructions from?

Their website indicates that they can supply with Ford 108mm PCD if required.

This may help as the detail was added by myself for those with <2003 front axles.
