Gridgway
Interesting re the spinning John , I looked at it on the bench, turned the input shaft clockwise (looking from the front, that's right isn't it?) and decide the spiral was moving oil down. I'll look again!

Gridgway
A quick update here. I've put the speedo drive (pictured above) loaned to me by Robert in with the gearbox on the bench. With my drive, after a day or two there's a distinct blob of oil on the end. With Robert's it's dry as a bone after 3 days. So it looks like I have found the issue. However, the diameter of both is pretty much identical. Very confusing. But on the basis that you can't get new drives, I suspect I'll have to live with the leak. Maybe it won't be as bad as it was with the old oil seal.
rkeywood
Glad that’s helped identify the issue. You should be able to get a new one - try the classic ford (escort, capri etc) specialists and gearbox rebuilders. AFAIK the type 9 and earlier boxes use the same drive so more options when you Google. There’s a German guy on Ebay selling metal shaft remakes - I’ve no experience but worth a punt. Gridgway
And BGH Geartech came up trumps. Not cheap but an all steel shafted one is on its way to me. Good shout Andrew!
Gridgway
And it arrived next day - very impressive. Sadly it's not the right one. The shaft has a groove in it around about where the lip of the oil seal would sit and also the hole in the middle where the speedo cable square section sits is round. It looks like whatever cable fits to it fits on the outside of the shaft not the inside. I'll call them tomorrow and see if they have one that is the right one. Wrightpayne
Mine constantly drips on my 6speed. I’ve changed the drive in situ (a challenging task if ever there was one). It was a second hand one and still leaks. And numerous seals. My theory is that when gearboxes are stripped the drive is tapped to knock the ‘cap’ out of the other end and the ferrule / plastic interface on the shaft is damaged. Can you post a pic of the all steel version so I can see if its a viable option for me? Thanks Ian Edited February 25 by Wrightpayne
Gridgway
This might show it Ian.
Gridgway
So I have looked again and there is a square drive "hole" in the end, so that's ok. You just can't easily see it from the end like you can on the other type. However that circular groove is exactly where the oil seal lip goes which isn't as per the other one and doesn't look like it would work to me, but maybe it is ok. Anyone got any thoughts on it? John Vine
I suspect the groove will prove to be a show-stopper. It seems to me that the spindle is for a different box/tailshaft. Did BGH provide a part number? Can you post a photo of both spindles, side by side? How many teeth do they have? Gridgway
No part number. Here's the pic. You can see the witness mark on the original on the left where the oil seal lip goes is pretty much dead on where the groove is. I'll call them when I have a spare moment today hopefully
John Vine
Thanks, Graham. That photo should convince BGH! JV
Wrightpayne
Googling at lunch on the bearingkits.co.uk website I think your latest ‘grooved’ purchase is for a type 3 cortina box, albeit website pictures are not always right! Bearingkits seem to have quite a lot of new type 9 speedo drives but some teeth quantities only second hand stock.
