Skipper555
Hi, the pixels on my odometer are failing, so I can't really read the mileage.Has anyone had this and fixed theirs before, or sent theirs off for repair somewhere?
Jonathan Kay
There's a thread about instrument repairs. I'll add a link when I'm on a better device this evening. Please can you add a photo so that we can identify the type. Jonathan
Skipper555
Thanks. Is this photo OK?
OldAndrewE
I would think Speedy Cables would be able to repair this. I think they are in the same building as the original manufacturer of your instrument. Caerbont don't seem to offer a repair service themselvesSpeedy Cables | Automotive Instrument Repair - Mechanical Cables
Skipper555
Brilliant, thanks. I was pointed at Caerbont but couldn't see anything about them repairing speedos.

Tom_Arundel
Caerbont certainly used to do fixes if you contact them direct.

Skipper555
Speed Cables were quick to come back to me, £336 as it needs to be upgraded to a modern PCB, 8-10 weeksI've contacted a few others for quotes
CAT170
I have a speedo that was given to me and if it suits I can send to you. It was given to me by a guy who found it and lots of other bits when Caterham left their original site in a rush - he gave all of them to a local Caterham owner but missed this. Looks identical to yours and attached photo shows the back. No idea if it works and no charge if you want to take a punt on it, just postage. John Vine
#11 That's an offer you can't refuse!According to my notes, that particular speedo was used from 2005 until around 2015 (when the CC logo went italic).@Skipper555: What year and model is your car?JV
CAT170
By the way, Caterham have several speedos on their spares site that are around £250-£300 so might have what you want. The one I have looks to be the 2005 onwards stepper motor version.Link is https://caterhamparts.co.uk/41-gauges
Skipper555
Wow! That would be superb thank you. I'll drop you a message to organize postage and payment.
Skipper555
It's a 2006 Roadsport SV so seems about right
John Vine
#13 The one I have looks to be the 2005 onwards stepper motor version.I agree. I think that's the one the OP has:https://caterhamparts.co.uk/gauges/220-speedo-mph-2005-stepper-motor-speed-sensor.htmlUnfortunately, it's out of stock, so your generous offer is even more attractive!JV
Ballast-ic
I had same issue. Shipped unit to Caerbont who took one look and said they don't fix these ones and sent it back. Works OK when starting up and cold, but pixels fail when warm. Only option is new unit, but pricey and hard to get. You lucked out with getting a freebie! Skipper555
Very much so, delighted with the generosity. If the new one works OK, I may well look at taking the old one apart to see if there's anything I can do. I've had a similar issue with an old BMW E39 dash, which was basically fixed by adding a bit of extra pressure on the pads for the connection to the display. AK Speedo supplied a kit to fix this, and they've replied that they will investigate a bit more into what they could do about it.Speedy Cables price and time to upgrade seems a lot considering the cost of a new unit from Caterham, although they are out of stock of course. Skipper555
Speedo from CAT170 arrived today. Many thanks for sending that over to me, really appreciate it.It powers up and the pixel display is nice and clear which is a result.I can set the pulses to match my old one too.I didn't get chance to give the car a run with this speedo fitted just yet.The only puzzle I have over it is the main odometer reading has // preceding the main number so it's showing //4296I did find another post that had a similar / (forward slash) issue, but I can't find it right now, but it seemed there was something wrong with their speedo and it wouldn't get rid of these / values when they increased from 999 to 1000 or something. I'll try and track it down again.Any thoughts on the / digit issue on this unit?

Skipper555
That's the one.Seems like a software issue with the unit then. It looks a pig to get into them too as the front black bezel wraps around the rear case, and didn't seem easy to get apart without wrecking the bezel or the case
CAT170
Since the PCB seems ok, would Speedy Cables be able to do the software update at a more reasonable price without opening it up?
Skipper555
Yes that's a good idea, and I'd still have a working speedo while they fix that one
John Vine
#19 How bizarre! I wasn't aware of that one. Before you set about organising a "repair", you could send that photo to Caerbont for their comments. The fix might just be a simple software update.JV
Skipper555
Good idea, will do although I didn't get any response from Caerbont last time I emailed them about repairing my original unit.
