Stu Smith
I'm having problems when refuelling, no matter which petrol station I use, the auto shut off never clicks the pump off, so unless I'm extremely careful I end up with petrol overflowing from the filler? SM25T
Are you getting the nozzle home in the filler neck ? I don't normally have problems with pumps having vapour recovery, but old fashioned ones can sometimes be trouble.
Stu Smith
Yeah nozzle inserted as far in as it will go, the petrol will just overflow passed the nozzle once it's getting full. I use 3 different Shell service staitions in my area and it does it at each one.
SM25T
Have you still got the sprung flap inside the neck ? Many of us haven't
Stu Smith
I have, is it easily removed?
SM25T
Yes, after removing the neck and working on it off the car
Stu Smith
Thanks, I'll do that and see if it makes a difference.
Nigel H
I have the opposite issue, I can't ever get the dam things to stop triggering. It takes ages to fill up and you can never be sure when it's full, as it clicks off all the time. Eventually it overflows and then you know . . . . Is this common also ?Thanks
Member Jonathan Kay Posted July 18, 2023 Member Share Posted July 18, 2023 Yes, that's much more common. Some owners carry an additional plastic filler neck.JonathanPS: Someone once posted something about Shell nozzles, but I can't find it.

PlastererPete
I carry around a suitable funnel in a carry bag just incase I get caught short of fuel. Generally when its empty I stick 20litres in and its almost full. Haven't got around to taking the flap out the filler neck yet. Would make life a hell of a lot easier. Is there a writeup or a couple of pictures somewhere to walk me through it?
ducatidentist
Newbie question What is the issue with the sprung flap and how does removing it help?
JonL
A curious issue. The 'autostop' on a pump nozzle is triggered by the end of the nozzle being immersed in fuel (it covers a small tube that runs inside the main delivery tube which is constantly 'sucking'. As soon as it is unable to 'suck' it shuts off the valve in the handle). The fact that you can overflow the fuel tank filler pipe without fully covering the whole nozzle tip would suggest that maybe the nozzle tip isn't in far enough, or is too horizontal so that fuel can flow back and out underneath the nozzle, or something else that is preventing the nozzle from being immersed. As with others - I always have the other problem and have to find the right position to prevent it auto-stopping constantly.
DougBaker
I have found that filling the tank a bit more slowly prevents it from overflowing.
Stu Smith
#13I will make sure the said nozzle is fully home and more vertical. I always feather the trigger I only ever give it the full gas for a few seconds if I'm filling from empty.
Stu Smith
Quick update Went out last night for a quick blat. Filled up at the same local Shell station I've always used. Once the nozzle was inserted fully I pushed it towards the front of the car keeping it a little more vertical, hey presto 1st time ever the auto shut off clicked off Thanks all..
