Andrew Bennett
Has anybody installed one and if so can they confirm what the thread is on the temperature sender? The instructions say 1/8 npt but I'm not convinced as it doesn't seat into a sump plug with a 1/8 npt female.
John Vine
When you say "doesn't seat", do you mean it won't screw in the whole way? Does the sender have a tapered thread?JV
Andrew Bennett
Correct it screws in about two thirds. It doesn't appear to have a tapered thread although the diagram on the instructions seems to show a taper.
John Vine
If your sender is 71167, it'll be tapered. When I fitted that sender to my wet-sump R400D, I mounted it in a ready-tapped blue sump plug (38D011A):JV
Andrew Bennett
No idea what the part number of the sender is as it came with the gauge already attached to the loom. If I could work out how to post a photo I would post a picture of it.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted July 3, 2023 Member Share Posted July 3, 2023 "If I could work out how to post a photo I would post a picture of it."There are three ways of posting images: two by uploading them to this site, and one by linking to them on another site eg Dropbox. They're all described in the Forum User Guide: https://www.lotus7.club/forum/chitchat/forum-user-guideMost Members now use the shortcut upload: https://www.lotus7.club/comment/2252151#comment-2252151That's quick and comparatively easy, but it does limit the resolution of the image. Not usually a problem for photos but can be for screen dumps, images of documents etc. The other two methods don't have that limitation. Please let me know if you need any help or want to practise.Jonathan
Andrew Bennett
Brilliant thanks. So this is the sender that came with the gauge. Documentation says it is 1/8 NPT but it wont fit into a 1/8 NPT sump plug.
John Vine
#7 ...but it wont fit into a 1/8 NPT sump plugYou said in #3 that the sender would go in about 2/3 of the way. If it's like other similar senders, that's normal as it'll have a tapered thread (that's what the "T" stands for). You just tighten it to the specified torque (or, failing that, until it's firm). And if has a single electrical connector, don't use sealant or PTFE as you need to maintain electrical contact. Is your sump plug the same as the one I linked to in #4?JV
Andrew Bennett
No I got the sump plug from Demon Tweeks. Thanks for the advice. Everyday is a school day owning a Caterham!

If so, this info suggests that the temp sender loom is 4-wire, including an earth, and should be sealed with PTFE tape.JV
