Lambretta
Hi allLooking for advice please.I just bought a JWM PS-12 battery for my 7. It was suggested that I secure the bracket to the thin sheet metal where the Banner tray was with some kind of captive nut that you install with a special tool. Can anyone point me in a direction where I might find something - or perhaps suggest a different solution?I have to be honest my instinct is to bolt it and put generous washers underneath to minimise vibration.ThanksRog
Member Jonathan Kay Posted June 24, 2023 Member Share Posted June 24, 2023 That sound like a RIVNUT or similar. They're widely used and trusted. If you can add a photo showing the position and access there might be some alternative suggestions.Jonathan

Lambretta
I hope this makes sense. It's over on the passenger side.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted June 24, 2023 Member Share Posted June 24, 2023 Picture shows fine. And the fasteners of interest will go vertically through those holes in the bracket?Jonathan

Gridgway
I'd not be using rivnuts to hold a battery in. They are good, but to my mind not for something safety critical that has mass like a battery. if you can get bolts in from underneath (by removing the battery tray) that you can hold to tighten that would be much better. One of my pet peeves is aftermarket batteries in 7s with shoddy bodged battery trays! Drumster
Defo nut and bolt with large penny washer. Rivnuts are not going to hold a battery in place in the unfortunate case of a front end shunt
Amos91
#9 4x rivnuts are more than enough for a 1kg battery. The Caterham tillet seat brackets (fixed) are also rivnut and that secures significantly more weight...
Tiddy7
It really depends which way the loads will be, in a front end shunt you would be mostly putting the bolts in shear ( I.e across the bolt) , if the battery was mounted to the vertical bulkhead then you would be relying on the rivnuts not pulling out of the bulkhead in which case they are likely to come out. Wilts the tillets you have a driver and a seat belts holding the seat down too
ScottR400D
My 7's standard battery, like hundreds of others probably, is held in by a simple bracket using rivnuts. That was OE..How many failures have there been?
Drumster
Well, having experienced a head on all I know was glad the battery tray was bolted down
7 wonders of the world
I use 3M dual lock tape to secure mine laid on its side..... battery weighs 1000 g and withstod a head on last year...Bearing in mind many tintops batteries which weighs something similar to Anglesey are 'held' in a tray with a strap and plastic clip. TJG
You might consider longer rivnuts through the panel and a large washer to spread the load.
Amos91
Are we still forgetting the battery is only 1kg still?
Bryan
You could use nut plates with it being above the footwell, might be a good happy medium.

David_Stamp
I used 4 x Rivnuts to attach my identical JWM battery cage without any problems. That is the attachment method that Jack Webb recommends himself..
Lambretta
Thanks for the replies all. For some reason Blatchat doesn't nag me that there have been replies.Having not seen a lot of this I went ahead with 4 x rivnuts. I fitted the isolation switch and accessory socket a while back so had to work around them but things are not as tight as they look.
