Graham Hutton
Do any of you lovely people have any experience of replacing a wiper motor? Mine is dead and I notice that the whole wiper assembly from Caterham Part is £295! It'd be good if it were possible to buy just the motor.I'm going to join a yoga class to develop enough flexibility to do the job now :-)
Wrightpayne
Might be worthwhile contacting the race teams - Team Parker and McMillan, they often remove them from race cars. Last time I was in Team Parker (>1 year ago) they had 6 on the shelf!I am close to both - if they dont want to post I can collect and package up for you. That said, it is a Lucas part so maybe easily sourced from a Mini / Triumph specialist. Graham Hutton
That is so helpful, many thanks!! I'll pull it out fully so I can see the part number and see if I can get one easily but if not, putting me in contact with the race teams would be amazing. Thanks again
rkeywood
The Mini/Triumph/Classic unit used on older 7s is a GXE7708 but do check this is what's used on later cars. A quick google will find plenty eg wiper motor Usually supplied with park switch but without drive gear. Intermittent is an add-on unit on older cars but it looks like replacement motors now wired for this. Spares also available if you want to do a DIY repair.. Graham Hutton
Me again! Having stripped things out ready to remove the wiper motor I thought I'd do some checks on the switch because that's be a hell of a lot easier to change! Anyhow, if I remove the big white connector block on the back of the switch, two of the terminals are live when the ignition is on and two are not. However, if I connect it to the switch, all 4 are live all of the time regardless of what position the switch is turned to. Does that sound iffy to you guys? Jonathan Kay
I don't understand what's happening with the switch. How about disconnecting it completely and checking continuity through it at each of its settings? What type of switch is it?Do you have the switch diagram?Do you have the wiring diagram for the Seven?JonathanPS: Had there been any recent work on the car? rkeywood
Start with the switch as JK says but I suspect it goes deeper. If it's the 'classic' Lucas type motor (without intermittent) then the live to the motor park switch will, when made, put live onto the 'off' connection for the switch but the other terminals shouldn't be live when disconnected from the switch. This is the typical wiring of the Lucas unit (shown with an MG slide switch but the principle is the same)The 'off' position on the switch connects 2 and 5 (to drive the wiper to it's parked position). The low and high on the switch connect the live on the switch to the respective speed. I have a vague recollection that based on the original Lucas connections the 1st speed was actually the high speed so these might be reversed. Graham Hutton
Thanks chaps. I will have mother look when I get home from work but given the low cost I have ordered another switch to try. It is the modern switch as the car is only 2 years old. No work has been done on it by anyone, the wipers simply stopped working mid use. I have the wiring diagram for the car but I guess it'll either be the switch or the motor as all the fuses are ok.from the diagram you posted, would you expect only one of the connectors in the connector plug to be live when the ignition is on and the switch not connected? It looks that way but there are definitely two with 12V, on connectors 1 & 3 I think.thanka again
Jonathan Kay
Is the connector like this, including the wiring colours? That's apart from the switch illumination: RW and B.Jonathan
Graham Hutton
Yes, that's it, exactly like that
Jonathan Kay
The wires are probably coloured according to the "standard" British pattern:ORANGE Wiper circuits fused via ignition switch Orange/Blue Switch to front screen wiper motor first speed, timer or intermittent unit Orange/Green Switch to front screen wiper motor second speed Orange/Black Switch to front screen wiper motor parking circuit, timer or intermittent unitJonathan
Jonathan Kay
That should help with identifying the terminals on the switch and the appropriate continuity for each switch position. NB disconnect first.Jonathan
rkeywood
The terminal no's on the diagram above are the Lucas motor connection numbers. Be careful when checking the cables - the early Caterham wiring diagram ('88) reverses the OG and OB with the OG being the park connection. This may be a drawing error, or how it was wired, or something has changed. I've not seen a later diagram to see if that's the same. This has a full guide to the motor and wiper assembly and shows the motor connections (the wiring colours are old school).
Graham Hutton
Thanks chaps, all very helpful. Replacement switch arrived in the post today which I have just fitted and...........it makes no difference! I 'll have to wait until the weekend to delve into the motor further. At least I am armed with all your wiring info though. I'll report back
