Selling

Foggy

Recommended Posts

After 17 years of ownership and much conscience struggling I've decided to sell my 98 1800 Roadsport.  She's always been a high days and holidays car so not track biased at all.  When is the general consensus of opinion, the optimum time to advertise and other than BC, anywhere else favoured?

Thanks all

GP Sevens offer very good prices so maybe worth chatting to them to sell your car for you if it's hassle?

Privately when the first few sunny days appear and weather warms up as people get itchy feet and want to enjoy the summer!  Now is not a good time IMO.

Pistonheads is always a good shout or eBay as a classified.  Both have great exposure which will definitely help.

Foggy, if the car itself is a good one and the price is right, then BC is good.  I sold two cars on BC - my R300K within 1 day for the asking price and my Honda Jazz within 1 hour, also for the asking price.

Spring is not too far away, I'd put an ad on here and see what happens.

Thank you both for your input.  I'm in no rush to sell but have arrived at the decision that there is no point putting off the inevitable.  I don't suppose it would do any harm to test the water at this stage and see what the response is like.

I sold one to an independent specialist.   There aren't that many and they also hold "wanted lists" from customers so well worth ringing around Milwood, Sevens and Classics, Turn 7, PT etc.  I wouldn't bother with Pistonheads as private ads are always playing second fiddle to trade adds which get top billing.

I haven't sold a car privately for years but the last two (Aston V8 Vantage and a BMW 330d coupe) I did were via Pistonheads.  It is after all, a specialist audience.

My "trick" was to edit the advert every day; nothing major, just add/remove a bit of punctuation.  The system then saw it as a fresh ad and put it back to the top of the list and maximised its exposure!

Sold both for near enough what I asked for reasonably quickly but, as mentioned above, the price has to be realistic for that to happen!

You'll maximise return by selling yourself and minimise effort by using the specialists listed above - your choice but either way if you really aren't in a hurry, wait a couple of months for the weather (and so desirability of a 7) to improve!

It's a while since I sold anything privately but these are specialist cars and have a narrower audience, as such I'm prepared to explore all avenues.

Miles, your suggestion of contacting Millwood would be worth a call as that's where she came from originally.

BigCol, very impressed with your "trick" and certainly worth remembering if I end up going down that route.

Nobody has mentioned the various Facebook forums as yet, they worth a try as well or is there a dark side that the unwary can fall into?
