What is this unit (Mondeo content)?

This is from my 2018 Mondeo Mk5 2L diesel estate.  There's no mention in the handbook, or anywhere on the web as far as I can see.

I've just replaced the battery, which entailed removing the air-box to gain access.  The unknown box came out with the air-box as a connected unit.

Thanks, folks.

#4: That's an interesting thought, James. When I first ran the car after changing the battery, I could detect a quiet "rushing air" sound (a bit like a mild turbo boost) on gentle acceleration.  It certainly wasn't there before so I'm wondering if I've upset or misaligned something.

I detached the two hoses at these points, and removed both boxes together as a unit:

I'll have a look tomorrow.

  • 2 weeks later...

An update (only really of interest to owners of later Ford 2L diesels *smile* ).....

There's a rubber bellows seal here between the extra (resonator?) box and the air intake.

It's only a contact joint, but I suspect I'd introduced a slight leak there on reassembly.  A small adjustment via the mounting screws seemed to fix it.
