1700 X-Flow Engine Removal

Done this many time with my VX-XE, but not done a X-Flow.

What is the received wisdom on this? Engine only or engine and box in one lump? Which is easier?

For reference, I don't need the box out.

Steve, did this several times with my old XF. Always removed the radiator, then took the box and engine out together. Much easier to mate up the box and engine to reinstall as well.

It helps if you have a hoist with a balance bar too.

If an early car with the ally transmission tunnel then unbolting the prop at the diff end and sliding it out of the way makes life easier.

Just the oil to deal with as the box tilts! You could probably tie wrap a thick plastic bag over the end!

As Ian ( Wrightpayne) said, on an early chassis, in our case a 1984 one,  there was no clearance at the front of the engine for it to be pulled clear of the box, so we had to drop the prop off the axle, and pull it out which allowed sufficient room to move the engine and box backwards to allow the front to clear the front chassis rails. Hope that's clear.

There's just enough space to split on later chassis but I've always pulled engine, box and prop together. Basically reverse of assembly instructions. Wiring prop to box and pushing a length of cordex into the bottom of the tunnel once the box is lifted off its mount helps things slide out. I've always found leaving the crane static and pushing the car away (with my foot) while lifting provides more control.
