CPGCharlie
I've just collected my 7 from a garage and unbelievably there are electrical issues that weren't no there when it was dropped of (8 weeks ago I should add! For a simple shake down service and some rose joint replacement - unbelievably disappointing!) Now neither the speedo or rev counter work at all. The car randomly cuts out completely, under hard acceleration ( at 6000 rpm in 3rd gear while overtaking is not safe) They say these aren't their fault and they kept the car for so long it's run out of it's MOT and now can't pass as the speedo doesn't work. I'm running a DTAfast Pro40 ECU and am about to try work it out. Any ideas what I'm looking for for the cutting out would be hugely appreciated. The underside of the dash is now a mess of wires and boxes that have all been disturbed since these lot had the car so no idea where to start with what they may have damaged to cause these issues. Any advice would be greatMany thanks Charlie
Jonathan Kay
What's the model, year and engine?Would you like the appropriate wiring diagram?Do you have a multimeter? How is the speedometer driven: mechanical cable, electronic from gearbox, electronic from driveshaft?Jonathan
Jonathan Kay
MoT inspection manual, with 7.8 Speedometer below. In my experience the speedometer is not checked.JonathanYou must check the speedometer of vehicles first used on or after 1 October 1937 with a maximum speed above 25mph. You do not need to check Class 3 vehicles. If a road test is needed, for example to carry out a decelerometer test, you must check whilst driving that the speedometer is working. If a road test is not necessary, you should only reject a speedometer if it’s clearly not working.Speedometers do not need to be lit on:vehicles with no front or rear position lampsvehicles that have front or rear positions lamps that are permanently disconnected, painted over or maskedYou can accept a tachograph as an alternative to a speedometer if it satisfies the requirements of this inspection. SM25T
Why would they be messing with wiring under the dash ? Check for loose or disconnected earth on the stud by wiper motor. 8 weeks ??? Was it a 7 specialist or a general garage ?
CPGCharlie
Hi Jonathan, it's 2005 series 5 SV with a 2.3 Duratec, I'm unsure on speedo drive, have received very little information from buying g the csr 4 years ago so have used "Specialists" hoping this would come with some level of information to fill in blanks from purchase. The digital odometer read out has gone down with the speedo. And there is only electric cable from the speedo unit, not sure if that helps? Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted August 9, 2022 Area Representative Share Posted August 9, 2022 So they replaced the rose joints & carried out a 'shake down service' which to me means all the standard oily stuff, plugs, front wheel bearing play check, prop shaft lube, brake pad condition check & maybe battery condition check. I cannot believe it took eight weeks to do just that !!So why has the car come out of the garage after that length of time in such a parlous condition when there should not have been any interference with the electrics ?Obviously the garage knew what they were doing....not !My commiserations in having to sort out the mess. Though if it were me I would be kicking in the garage door & asking questions
CPS7
Hmm. They put some miles on it in the 8 weeks..... odometer down......
Gridgway
Have you asked why the electrics were disturbed in the process?
CPGCharlie
yes Im mortified about the whole experience and the bottom line is keeping the car so long the MOT expired and being given back an unroad worthy car. Still waiting for them to hopefully deliver a solution but another week has passed and my summer driving is non existent. As soon as there is a agreeable conclusion I will absolutely disclose the outfit.
