Nigel Blandin
Hi all,Just opened up the box and, of course, it is all for a modern loom.Has anyone any tips on fitting LEDs to a 1990 era car? On the modern ones, it looks like the loom is split half down each side of the chassis - unfortunately, with the same coloured wires each side!Mine comes down one side and then goes across the back. The fog, reverse and number plate lamp are easy enough. I'll have to break down the connectors anyway, so could just test through them all to see what they do....Or I could see if someone has had all the freight and can save me time! Nigel Blandin
Or, has someone got a modern Caterham wiring diagram? I just need to match the other colours...Doh.It's been a long day and I have a headache!
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 23, 2022 Member Share Posted March 23, 2022 I have the wiring diagrams for both 1990 and current (!) Sevens. Please send me a Private Message with your email address and details of the Seven.Caterham usually adhered to the "standard" British wiring colours.Jonathan
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 23, 2022 Member Share Posted March 23, 2022 There are two electrical issues with LED indicators that might be relevant in a 1990 Seven:You might need a different relay. If you have a single warning lamp on the dash for both sides you might need to rewire it.Jonathan
Nigel Blandin
I have the relay, I'd not considered the light issue Jonathan. So the new' uns have a light for each side?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 23, 2022 Member Share Posted March 23, 2022 The old single warning light circuit is funny. The circuit is completed by the light circuit on the inactive side! This causes a problem if you replace the incandescant warning lamp with an LED warning lamp as it will only pass the current one way. There is a simple modification to the circuit that removes the problem. But I've just realised that I can't remember if changing the indicators themselves to LEDs causes the same problem...Anyway here's the explanation and the modification.Jonathan
Nigel Blandin
Thanks for the heads up. I will check that before swearing at it! I was flummoxed by the reverse light circuit yesterday until I remembered it's an earth switch, so that runs "backwards" as well.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted March 23, 2022 Member Share Posted March 23, 2022 Having taken advice from m'learned friend... changing the indicators to LEDs shouldn't cause the same problem as changing the warning light.Jonathan
