Gridgway
On the final part of disassembly, I am taking the axle out to get an ATB fitted. But what's the practical way of getting the axle out? I have one end supported on a strop off an engine hoist so that can roll out. How does one support the other end? Is it just a question of lying on the floor underneath it and manually lifting while someone else moves the crane back?CheersGraham
Wrightpayne
Easier with two persons! Tazio and I covered the chassis tubes with pipe lagging and just moved it in small steps and rested on the lagging. Once it was predominantly out I just lifted it! rkeywood
As above. I do single handed so usually lift the car on a chassis stand to get a good bit of space under. Move the axle one until the backplate clears the chassis and drop that end, then back the other way to clear the other side and drop that. Doing without the tank makes life easierR
Gridgway
Thanks, I'll have another go with help from Mrs R (working the engine crane). I've protected the chassis tubes, but was trying to support it clear of them. I've got it moved so the backing plate is inside as it were. I was musing that I should have done it while the tank was out!I'll report back!
Gordon C
Been some years since I had my axle assy out of the car. When I did I had the car supported on a trolley. This enabled me to roll the car forward or side ways should I need it. The axle was supported by axle stands. With the bolts removed the axle just sat very nicely on the stands. All very easy even single handed.
Tony P
The film 'American Graffiti' was shown on tv again the other day.Their method might leave more remedial work to be done though...
Gridgway
It was very easy actually. Had the engine crane lifting one end with Mrs R rolling that back and I lifted the other end underneath, very simple. It's gone off now to Hardy Engineering to be refurbed mechanically and blasted for painting. I've also ordered an ATB from Quaife to be fitted at the same time.Don't think I'll try the American Grafiti method though!
