wild bill
My cover has a hairline crack so needs replacing. 2 questions1) can the crank pulley be undone to get the cover off without disturbing the timing?2) Does the cam cover need undoing and then resealing?Depending on answers i might have a crack myself or give it to someone who knows what they're doing
David_Long
Unless the crank has a keyway, the cam and ignition timing will be released and will need set before the pulley bolt is tightened. The cam cover is a rubber type seal and should reseal without any problem. But only change the cover if it is leaking oil. There are casting marks that can look like cracks. wild bill
No the timing chain cover is definitely leaking oil David well a slight weep more like. I'm not sure if the crank has a keyway hence my question. Is there a way of finding out?
pgm
Duratec engines are normally keyless. It all relies on the crankshaft bolt which you should replace. If it isn't correctly tightened it can let the pulley slip which will damage the valves and possibly pistons etc. If it is a minor leak and you prefer not to strip it down try a thorough clean and a sealant or possibly a chemical metal depending where the leak is. It may work and if so it will save you a fair amount of work including retiming the engine. Regards Colin
David_Long
A keyway may only be apparent when the pulley bolt is removed, but if there is an aftermarket pulley then it is more likely to have one. If it is a Cosworth CSR engine then there won't be a keyway. Although timing up the engine can be daunting if you haven't do it before, it is relatively straightforward if taken set by step. The Cosworth CSR manual uses a bar in the back of the cams at TDC, and the pulley trigger wheel uses a bolt through a hole in it at TDC. A timing Kit is readily available through factors or Ebay. Once the pulley is tightened the white tooth is set to the center by adjusting the crank position sensor. I can PM the Cosworth manual if you like, or you can down load the file on the Caterham Technical Discusion FB group, if it is not already on here somewhere. Wrightpayne
There are a few videos on youtube - it doesnt look too bad a job with the correct tools to hold the cams / crank in the right place.

7 wonders of the world
OE crank bolts are 1 time use too so you will need a new one - CC carry them at a decent price.do not use the crank locking pin to lock the crank to either under or tighten the bolt either !
