rayjackson1950
Hi allMy 1997 S3 front off side wheel doesn't like my car anymore. The shaft going into the top of the Trunnion sheared off.First, can anyone advise what I need to repair.Secondly, It has been suggested I upgrade both front wheel's geometry. If this upgrade makes it stronger and more reliable I might have to dig into the piggy bank. Can anyone advise what I need, to carry out this upgrade. Wrightpayne
You need a new upright (vertical link) as its not repairable. A common cause of this is lubricating with grease rather than EP90 gear oil. I would order a new brass trunion too. Looks like caterham are out of stock so perhaps Redline or one of the Triumph specialists? The stub axle will need removing from the old upright and transferring over. This usually involves some heat and a lump hammer! Also the steering arm.Regarding geometry there is lots of tweaks / modifications you can do to the old style suspension - what are you looking to achieve? rayjackson1950
Hi IanThanks for the info.It was oiled, not greased, but as I only got the car Jan 2020, I don't know what happened previously.I am only looking for reliability.I did think to try Redline. I also sent Caterham an email, although not confident or=f a useful response.

TomB
If you need to buy a new upright, is it an opportunity to upgrade to the later front suspension and do away with the trunnions?
Wrightpayne
Tom,Good point - I think Canley Classics sell a kit to replace the trunion to enable use of the later uprights. https://www.canleyclassics.com/?product=trunnionless-front-suspension-kitIan
rayjackson1950
Hi IanThanks for the info, ive not heard of Canley but they do two, I just need to know which one. Perhaps you know. I have also emailed Canley to ask them.
TomB
I was thinking about the de-dion car arrangement with double wishbone with anti-roll bar. But I expect you would need to replace much more than a single upright, so its rather more than a repair!
Tazio
David Sutton, known as Sooty on here installed the Canley kit in the last 18 months, so he's the right person to ask.
ECR
If you go for the later uprights which have a rose type bearing at the bottom instead of the trunnions, you would also need new bottom wishbones. It'll start to get expensive, but it's a much better arrangement.
