Gridgway
In my new to me LA crossflow. I'd like to work out which back axle it is and what condition it is in. The car has only done 10k miles since new (yep) so it should be ok, the question is whether it is or not. I have no symptoms to say it's notOr should I just have it off over the winter and send it to a specialist to check out and remedy any wear? If so, whom?CheersGraham
Wrightpayne
What PCD are the hubs - 95.25 = Ital. 108 = Ford English.
Tazio
Ital axles, the diff comes out the front, Ford comes out the back of the axle case. Usual suspects, Road and Race Transmissions, , though I got Andy McMillan to put a quaife atb and shimmed the bearings on my Ital.Alan
simon_h
Can’t imagine there will be any wear after that mileage. I’d drain the oil and if it’s not sparkling it’s probably ok. At least fresh oil and then running it for a bit won’t make it any worse really
7 wonders of the world
Ford English axles are Timken design so the entire final drive comes out of the front one the half shafts are pulled. Mk 1 & 2 Escort typeThe larger Salisbury Atlas versions comes out form the the rear and the main case and tubes are one piece - this axle wasn't used in 7's
Area Representative Golf Juliet Tango Posted September 1, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted September 1, 2021 10,000! Is that all? Hardly run in. 135,000 (plus a few) in my '96 Crossflow.
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted September 2, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted September 2, 2021 Ford diff (as used in a live axle 7) also comes out of the front like the Marina/Ital.
Nigel B
If it's quiet and appears to be working as it should, I'd simply get out there & enjoy it.
Gridgway
Thanks All for the info. I will check the oil and certainly carry on for the time being. Then decide whether to have a look over the winter.
Tazio
If its an Ital axle, the advice is to fill it, then put another litre in through the breather hole.
