SLR 11
Hi all, I just noticed that the dampers on my 98 SLR are mounted upside down. Does anyone else have this configuration and is there a reason for this? Looking forward to any answers. Thanks.
aerobod - near CYYC
My front ones are mounted upside down, mainly due to the fact that there is less unsprung mass on the piston side than the body side.
Tazio
Quite normal, easier to adjust the collars

7 wonders of the world
Standard Billies are a twin tube design and should be mounted the correct way up, unlike mono tubes which can be mounted upside down to reduce unsprung weight.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted June 12, 2021 Leadership Team Share Posted June 12, 2021 So are you saying Bilsteins fitted USD won't reduce unsprung weight, or are you saying they shouldn't be USD for other reasons? My understanding is that Bilsteins function perfectly fine whichever way up.Stu.
ChrisC
When the club was shown the Caterham Technology Centre, I remember them showing the Bilstein development for the 160. At the time they said all Caterham shocks where mono tube, because the variance from a twin tube found in normal road car shock would be unacceptable give the weight of the vehicle. They even had one disassembled and showed its components and how the valves where changed for the 160. Do you know how to tell if the Bilstein fitted is mono or twin? SM25T
When I bought my 1-way Protech shocks, I was advised that they had to be fitted with the adjustable valve at the bottom, otherwise air can collect at the valve at the top, and affect their operation. 7 wonders of the world
Unless they have changed spec the standard ones were twin tube with the race models being monotube.I checked with Bilstien when I ran them giving them the part number etc to make sure this was in 2006 so it's possible they have..?Basically it's operational, as it's possible to get a cavity in the oil which results in loss of damping in a small portion of the stroke.
