Molecular--Bob
The top-hat on my type 9 angle drive has separated. Has anyone had this repaired or should I just replace it?
Nigel Riches
Been there, done that, ok it was back in the dim darks of the '"80s remember them, no, oh well. back then it was a just get a new one, after all this time might not be so easy, but any decent engineering shop should be able to do a fix, good luck. John Vine
Do you mean this little fella? In stock at CC (and Redline no doubt).JV
garybee
Seems like a very reasonably priced part. It's not even worth firing up the lathe to make your own when it's being sold for that price.
Molecular--Bob
Unfortunately not, mine is the original 1990 spec VDO angle drive which doesn't use that part. That part might be adapted to work though if my plan to silver solder the washer back on doesn't work. My thinking is that I could drill that out to an interference fit with the raised lip and then flood it with solder to lock it in place.
John Vine
Is this the angle drive? At that price, I'd be attempting a repair too!(My old 1999 1.8K used this later one.)JV
Molecular--Bob
Yes, that is the one,but the Caterham version just has a washer brazed onto the end, rather than the extended collar The drive itself is working well so hope a repair will work. If not, a GPS speedo is actually a lot cheaper.
Wrightpayne
Just doing a bit of googling and the Smiths MGB / Triumph / Healey angle drive looks very similar to the later version and around £50. Would need the brass threaded top hat.
Molecular--Bob
That looks like an option will bear it in mind if my other repair options fail.
Richard K
Had mine repaired by a friend who is a plumber with 'solder'.He was not sure it would work but it's still working 6+ years on.......It can work.Richard
Molecular--Bob
My friend is a hobby jewler, but has concerns about the amount of heat that will transmit into the angle drive itself. Just waiting on some 55%silver solder and flux to arrive.
