Blackmamba
HelloMy car is fitted with a Banner battery and each side has a small plastic plug on it a little below the rim. I seem to have lost the plastic plug on one side so when I drive the car, I lose water from it. It looks like it serves some function so I don't want to fill it completely.Does anyone know if it can be plugged up (with glue / sealant etc) or do I need to replace the plug? Thanks
Guy Lowe
It should have a 90 degree elbow with a vent pipe attached to vent the battery.

Tom_Arundel
It`s not water, it`s diluted sulfuric acid....suggest you clean the entire area asap. Fit windscreen washer type tube in hole and let it vent below car
SM25T
Clean it with lots of water and maybe bicarbonate to neutralise the acid.
ScottR400D
There doesn't need to be a 90 degree fitting but it and the pipe can be got from Bsnner. A small, poss 3mm bore poly tube should just push in and then be fed through to drain under the car. It's a breather or vent pipe and should normally just have hydrogen passing through it as the battery gasses during charging. If anything. IIRC, on my car it comes out through one of the big holes in the battery bracket then straight down.
Blackmamba
Thanks all, will clean it up and fit the vent pipe.
SM25T
It could well be overcharging or overfilled if it is leaking acid from the vent
Tom_Arundel
They don`t normally spill, is the battery fluid level too high...should be just above the level marker in each cell
Blackmamba
The vent pipe and the plug are missing on one side so there is literally a small hole where the fluid is escaping.
Blackmamba
Just had a look and there seems to be a white plug on one side and nothing on the other. There would be no room for a vent pipe with the covers screwed down fully so not sure what the correct set up for this battery should be?

StevehS3
This is what is fitted in my Banner hole https://www.tayna.co.uk/battery-leads-terminals/vent-pipes/vent-tube/
Alastair B
The inboard vent is where my poly tube connects and goes straight down. The outboard facing vent on mine is blanked. Your pictures would seem to show your blank is in the inboard position when the battery is in position and should be moved to the outboard side, with a vent tube added on the inboard. Mine does not have a 90 degree T, the poly tube fits snuggly.
SM25T
When the cap is fitted, it has cut outs to allow the vent hole to function.

Blackmamba
Thanks all for the help. Found some tubing of the right size and plugged directly into the hole. Routed and cable tied the tubing down and onto the floor.
Roy Blyth
I recently bought a new Banner and it arrived with both holes plugged, one red and one white. Instructions were taped across it instructing you to immediately remove the red plug, but nothing about fitting a vent tube as described above. Blackmamba
@ #18 I am still very surprised no one does a decent maintenance free battery to fit the 7! First time I have ever topped up a car battery and had to figure out where to fit a vent pipe!I think I'm going to switch to a lithium battery when this packs up. aerobod - near CYYC
The Yuasa 32Ah GYZ32HL AGM battery is totally maintenance free and significantly higher cranking amps than the Banner. It is a couple of mm wider but overall slightly smaller in volume, so does require modification to the standard battery tray to slip in without force. SM25T
I use a nice sealed lead acid battery from Odyssey.

John Vine
Curiouser and curiouser! My 2008 car is on its second Banner, and neither of them was fitted with a vent pipe. I don't get any liquid leaks at all. The current battery was supplied and fitted by CC in 2014 when they did my roller-barrel upgrade, so I would have expected them to fit a vent if one was needed. The battery has an open hole at the negative end and a black plug at the positive end. The electrolyte levels are just at the top of the marker peg.JV
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 21, 2021 Member Share Posted May 21, 2021 It's mentioned in several of Banner's own FAQs. They call it a "degassing hose".https://www.bannerbatterien.com/en-gb/Support/FAQAnd that doesn't explain why it's widely used in Sevens with the battery in the engine bay.Jonathan
John Vine
Thanks for that link, Jonathan. The relevant FAQ says:Must I use a degassing hose when the battery is installed inside the vehicle?Yes, always! We prescribe the obligatory employment of a degassing hose (Part Number 1030001700 with a hose length of 90 cm including an elbow) when installing all types of lead-acid battery in the interior/passenger compartment.Maybe the key phrases here are inside the vehicle and interior/passenger compartment, neither of which applies to a battery mounted in the well ventilated engine bay of a 7. So, it would appear that my lack of hose is OK after all!JV
