pkw2704
so still learning about the car, mine runs the 1.8K mated to the 6 speed box and standard sierra /cat diff. One thing i have noticed is transmission noise,is this normal ? if not what could be the culprit? is there a way of proving which area is causing the noise or is it a case of they all do that siri used to have a west..... 7 with a 2.0 vauxhall to a sierra 5 speed and lsd and it wasnt noisyadvice welcome
timb2117
Same set up and no real "extra noise" that I can comment on. Maybe, change gearbox/ diff oils. Grease propshaft at nipples. Check for loose bolts on anything, diff housing, gearbox mounts, and propshaft bolts. Can you define the noise? Whining, clunking etc?
Tazio
You just need better hearing protection.

pkw2704
whine in reverse, quite loud less of a whine forwards, there is a some clunking at low throttle made me wonder if its diff lash.oils have been done apparently, hoping its not g/box related .it could be deemed normal but i only have my last westy to compare to
ScottR400D
You've not said anything that would make me worry. As said use earplugs, and if you already are get some better ones!Reverse is usually a bit more noisy, being straight cut, but most gearboxes and diffs will whine and clunk to some extent. timb2117
The low throttle clunk is that when you come on/ off the throttle lightly? could be simply the bolts mounting diff or more likely gearbox to body or even a bit of gearbox/ bodywork interference, either way as Scott said does not sound major. Tom_Arundel
I was singing as loudly as I could whilst blatting the other day and I couldn`t hear a word of it.....probably a good thing
Leadership Team Toughie Posted April 27, 2021 Leadership Team Share Posted April 27, 2021 I now have a CSR. The rear is much, much quieter than my old Roadsport. It's very nerve-racking. Without all the proper clunking going on behind me, I'm never quite sure I still have a back end!
pkw2704
Because i am new to Caterhams it took me by surprise,a little disappointed if I am honest the westy was quiet. Will look to see if anything is touching (which i doubt) and drop the prop and feel where most lash is .Does the sierra diff fit in the caterham or is it a ball ache? p.mole1
Check the mountings, they ane metal elastic bushes and should be fitted with shims. Check the diff is isolated properly and bushes are doing their job. if the shims are incorrectly installed you can get metal to metal contact, transferring a lot of noise.
