Groaning Springs

James Arnold

Recommended Posts

When the back of my 7 moves on the suspension I get a groaning/creaking noise. A brief investigation suggests that the springs are rubbing on the shocks. A liberal spraying of WD has quieted matters somewhat, but not cured it.

Why are my springs deforming sideways like this? Is it a sign that they are past their best (which I suspect they are).

The car is a 91 Xflow live axle, with what looks like the original Spaxs.

I have by hand rotated the springs around on thier base 180 degrees and it never gave me any noise again. This was on a Lotus Elan.....still pretty much the same idea though. You may have to use big pliers or a pipe wrench. It drove me nuts (the noise) until a friend suggested this.

Had the same problem with my 91 live axle. A good spray of grease used to sort it out.

I have now changed the shocks for Leda's, the springs are a different diameter, so caused a different problem. All creaking now sorted out.
