Jeff210R
Can anyone please tell me what size the drain/fill plug on a BMW diff is? I naively thought it would be 10 mil but seems far bigger!
aerobod - near CYYC
If you mean the hex key size, should be 14mm.
Jeff210R
That's it. A biggun!
ScottR400D
Halford’s and others sell a cheap little set of drain plug tools. The 14mm has a 17mm hex on the other end. Put the tool into the plug and use a 17mm spanner. Laser 1580, about a tenner.
Jeff210R
Price has gone up. £20 now less club discount of course. But my local branch has in stock!
ScottR400D
Of course, if you then change to a mag plug you need a 22mm spanner..........
Jeff210R
Job done but what a bugger. The de Dion gets in the way and I found I had to access it through the boot floor. And I should have had a length of suitable tubing ready to feed the oil in cos it definitely doesn't like to leave the bottle with it semi horizontal. Still; you live and learn! ScottR400D
It is a bit awkward from below and I normally take the alloy floor out. I use a Laser 4385 pump to refill, works a treat. About £17. Also used on the gearbox.
7 wonders of the world
pop a length of tube on the bottle spout, feed it into the filler, invert the oil bottle in the corner of the boot, stab small hole (2mm) in the bottom of the bottle which is now upper most ...... put the kettle on and come back in 20 mins - bottle empty. aerobod - near CYYC
It also speeds the proceedings with the inverted bottle if you put it in a bowl of hot water first, to allow the oil to flow much more easily.
7 wonders of the world
or just have a second brew..... mind you with the temps you have over there your gear oil with now be more like grease.....
Jeff210R
Now all I have to do is try and undo the gearbox plug which I suspect has already been messed up by someone who didn't have a cut down hex key!
Tom_Arundel
I don`t know what the BMW plug is like but I put 2 spanner flats on my Sierra plug and use a spanner...easy.
