orangepeel61
I've discovered I'm missing a front hub inner bearing water shield on one side, no one seems to stock them anymore, it's a long shot but has anyone got one they don't need? (or point me to somewhere else I could try).Thanks,Neil.
Area Representative Paul Richards Posted November 19, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted November 19, 2020 If you've no5 already done so I can only suggest giving Rimmer Bros a ring. It is shown on their website as superseded. They may be able to supply an alternative or offer advise.
SM25T
Is that the felt seal adhered in a soft metal cup ?
SM25T
When I upgraded to the new hub, the bearings are sealed bearings. Could a sealed bearing be used in place of bearing plus felt seal in your case ?
SM25T
Try Chris at Redline for felt seal ?

Wrightpayne
I read the post and instantly thought of the felt seal / metal retainer. Its actually some sort of water splash guard that is not present on later cars. Googling the part number brings up several forum posts (on different forums) asking if anyone knows of a source, so, as Neil alludes to already, they are no longer available new.On some of the posts relating to car restorations (Triumph) it seems to suggest it is acceptable to run without these splash shields.Ian
SM25T
I tried being gentle tapping the soft cup into place. That didn't work. Once it is bent, it is useless. Put the hub face down on its studs. Put felt seal on top of recess with metal cup facing into hub. Piece of wood to cover felt ring. Hit it hard in the centre of the wood with the biggest hammer you have. Home and square in one. Make sure bearing in place first though !! Changing to upgraded hub was one of the best things I did. orangepeel61
Thanks for your help guys, Ian is right, it's a splash guard. If i cant get one I'll have to leave it as is, it's been ok for the last 34 years so maybe I'm worrying too much.I've ordered a wheel bearing kit from Rimmer Bros which includes the later rubber type seal, I read on another forum somewhere that it should be a direct replacement for the felt type. Wrightpayne
Hmm - has the stub axle got some fretting / bearing spin? Seems to be marked near the back. Can you feel any edges when you run a finger nail over it?Years ago I had a classic mini (on discs) spin an outer bearing race in its hub so the outer was actually loose! orangepeel61
A little but the photo makes it look worse than it is, with new bearings and fresh grease I think it'll be fine, this will be a more regular service exercise in the future. Bricol
The felt seals are a very robust, long lasting solution - even with more modern materials, there are still situations were you would use felt as anything else simply doesn't survive. They need a thorough greasing, or soaking in oil then greasing, before installation. My spare ones are sitting in a jar of oil ready . . .Engineered felt is a surprisingly large industry. Complicated even. If you really fancied it, you could probably get a local gasket maker to cut you new rings to glue in.
OldAndrewE
If the bearing is spinning on the shaft, even it is only slightly, it can only get worse. A bit of Loctite 641 bearing fit on assembly may be advisable
JonT
Am I getting the greasing bit wrong? I installed new felt seals on mine, and following advice on here tried to lubricate thoroughly but all it's done is flick grease all over the side skin, especially if there's any steering lock applied. SM25T
You only need to work the grease into the rollers in the bearings. Don't pack the entire void.
elie boone
JonT, yes you have overdone it
orangepeel61
So have you got the water shields fitted on your car JonT? I would have thought they would have prevented grease flicking out as well as water splashing in.
Wrightpayne
Jon,If its any consolation I repacked the bearings only and initially got some grease spatter! Ian
Bricol
A splodge in the void is okay - packed solid is bad. Overheating and bearing failure can be caused.Felt seal doesn't need to be over-greased - although if it had, I would have thought you wouldn't have it continuing after the first run or two. JonT
Thanks all, maybe I have overdone it. I don't have any water shields on mine.
