mandalman
I am bemused. Looking at the carbon fibre porn on the Caterham Parts website I notice they sell carbon fibre nose whiskers. I'm fairly new to Caterham's but I'm pretty sure my nose is clean-shaven. what on earth are they and where do they go? Pictures of your own whiskers appreciated
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted September 29, 2020 Leadership Team Share Posted September 29, 2020 From the Caterham website:They probably add about 40g of downforce each ....Stu.
mandalman
thanks Stu. Looks like essential kit but I think I'll pass
Pondboy
All the rage amongst M3/M4 owners, but at least they have a chance of slicing open any pedestrians they clip. Money making extras IMO.
ScottR400D
And, in my case a bugger to fit because the location dots put on the nose by CC were apparently done by Stevie Wonder......
nickh7
I find that cut my lap times by seconds with improved stability under braking and better turn in . Well that's what the marketing department told me
Saltyhair81
That's the ones on my car. I love the look. Definitely get them!
Bricol
I'm sure they do something on a car with the aerodynamic properties of a cracked breeze-block . . . just not sure what :)
CtrMint
Here's mine on the 620R, they help cool the car
David aka Blue7
Described originally by EVO as winglets, they first appeared on the CSR in 2005 along with re-profiled cycle wings, mounted closer to the tyre to cut drag, and a new larger nose cone complete with a floor mounted chin, all combined to reduce the front end lift by 50 percent. The net effect for the driver, according to EVO was a major decrease in high-speed understeer. They have since reappeared on the 620 range. What they achieve on their own is anybodies' guess other than an endeavor to emulate the handsome looks of a CSR ... I would ban sales to all smooth chins that can't prove that the own a CSR
mandalman
It may be sacrilege to say it but does anyone else think the appeal of the CSR is a bit marmite? I personally find the squared off cycle wings really ugly
7 wonders of the world
CSR front wings are a much more efficient design, reducing the volume of air getting under them and therefore lift, downside is they are a tad short on the back so you get more spray in the wet. paul_w
There was an article in one of the mags years ago putting a 7 in a wind tunnel and playing around with various bits and pieces and that is what led to the whiskers and the CSR wings - although they are very small tweaks I seem to remember they were surprisingly effective at cutting lift (which was the main objective) though it was a long long time ago I read it. paul_w
Found it in this thread (edited: the links are broken in the old thread - anyone got a copy?)
tjuniper
Would love to see a modern set of wind tunnel experiments for the 7. Anyone got a spare fan, sealed chamber and set of drag analysis equipment lying around? I have the winglets too but purely on the basis that I am a carbon tart. CtrMint
I've often wondered why greater effort doesn't go into sealing the underside of the car, surely there's an aero benefit form sealing the transmission tunnel.
David aka Blue7
From what David Brown reported, during his ongoing efforts to replace his CSR propshaft, the rear section of a CSR transmission is sealed with a cover plate and 32 rivets . https://www.lotus7.club/forum/chitchat/csr-engine-problem-update
CtrMint
This thread got me thinking, I wonder how easy it would be to 3D print clip-on parts for the lower wishbones. A lightweight clip-on plastic part which generates downforce across the cross-section front edge of the wishbone might be more effective than the narrow surface area of the whisker. Gloucestershire AR
Call me an old CF tart but I rather like them :-), and (narrowed) CSR wings too. Here they are on my '88 S3. Do they make a difference? I've also enclosed behind the nosecone, the transmission tunnel (short cockpit cars had that and I'm sure the car felt tauter with it), the rear A frame and added a rear diffuser (which also protects the ali tank) and am convinced the car feels more stable at higher speeds with that lot. Besides I like the look!
