Seabea23
I have removed all the nuts and caphead but the loose manifold appears to be trapped behind the water rail. Do I really need to remove the water rail ( drain the system?) to give the manifold enough clearance for removal. The long studs into the head don’t help. Any thoughts appreciated. SM25T
Is it a one piece manifold or separate primaries ? I have separate pieces, and the primaries can be removed without disturbing the water rail.
SM25T
It sounds like you have answered your own question though. You say it is trapped behind the water rail .... so you know the answer. Would shortening the studs also answer your question ? If so, put the nuts back on, then cut the studs, then removing the nut will clean the thread. Alan Bowler
I recall undoing nearside engine mount and jack up the sump. Engine tilts a bit giving you room. But maybe that was to clear the diagonal, not the water rail.
Seabea23
Thanks for your thoughts gents. The manifold is the standard single unit.I am fitting a set of separate primaries. As you suggest SM25T, shortening the studs should work if I can get enough access cut them.
SM25T
Maybe you can unscrew the studs with mole grips, and use cap head socket set screws ... just not too long ... you don't want them to bottom out in the holes.
Seabea23
I would imagine the studs will have fused into the Aluminium. I think I will put it back together and have a rethink, I have head work booked with DVA in the Autumn. The plan was to fit the separate primaries in advance of the work but it will have to wait. Thanks again all.
garybee
I've just nipped out to the garage to look at my spare engine. It has a water rail and manifold on it and I can't see the water rail stopping the manifold coming off. It's a little close at the rear but not in the way. Even if yours is there's no reason not to put a couple of nuts on it and see it it turns out. Why assume it's corroded into the head when you can check in seconds?
