Smithy1
Purchased a 2010 Roadsport SV with Sigma engine and 5 speed box at the weekend. On the 140 mile journey home it became apparent there is a slight issue with the gearbox. It changes from 1st to 2nd with no problem at all, but changing down to 2nd from any gear is very problematic, especially at higher revs.Is this a common problem, has anyone experienced it before? Many thanks for your thoughts.Giles
Area Representative Andrew Gilbert Posted June 14, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted June 14, 2020 it may just need a top up of oil so do that first. I ignored it with mine (type 9) ended up needing a gearbox overhaul to replace the damaged parts!
Tom_Arundel
Does 3rd gear crunch alot?
Smithy1
Third gear is fine, just an issue with 2nd. Thanks for your comments.
Roadsport06
I'd get the oil out (common method is a pelta oil extractor) and fill up from there. At least then you know you have the correct oil and level as your starting point.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted June 15, 2020 Leadership Team Share Posted June 15, 2020 Agreed, get (or do) an oil change to ensure the correct oil and qty (75w/90 GL4). The same issue in a 6 speed would herald cries of "swap it for Redline MTL" but my personal opinion is that the standard spec oil is better for the 5 speed.Stu. Tony Whitley
No it's not a common problem and I would be concerned. I'm not convinced that low oil or the wrong oil would cause "very problematic" gearchanges, they might be the answer to a bit of crunch on fast changes but nothing more than that. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted June 15, 2020 Leadership Team Share Posted June 15, 2020 Start with an oil change though, it's cheap.Edited to add ... if it's private purchase start by swapping the oil but if you bought it from a dealer take it back so they can see the problem and likely swap the oil. Bricol
Previous experience with ropey Type 9s is that making sure its got the right level of the right oil quietens down rattles and noises, but doesn't do much for the actual change.
Smithy1
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I spoke to the garage I purchased the car from this morning and they are arranging for the gearbox to be removed and refurbished at a Caterham specialist near to me. So hopefully any issues will be fully resolved.
Roadsport06
Super - a nice result.I don't mean to spend your money...... if it is an unmodified box then I would consider getting different ratios from SPC. When my engine ever needs to come out then that is my plan. The ratios for the 5 sp just don't suit the seven.
7 wonders of the world
Whilst they are doing the refurb my be an idea to see if they will refit a set of Tracsport dears in there with proper ratios and sort a price with them....https://www.tracsport.com/gearkits
Garth
Another vote for Tracsport gears.....
TomB
Great minds, I thought the same! Its on my list of possible projects, but its not cheap. Is a Type 9 fairly straightforward for any local gearbox specialist to rebuild with a Tracsport gearset?
7 wonders of the world
Yes the Tracsport ones are a straight swap, theres only only one thing different on assembly regarding a bush for the laygear front bearing which ideally requires a light press.Maybe the dealer will allow Steve @ SPC to do the work required for there part..?
