Fridybrydy
Anyone know of a place in West Yorkshire I could have the cambelt auto tensioner as fitted to by 1.8 K series engine, replaced with a manual tensioner and expected cost? Thanks
Bricol
Any local garage that's been around for a while will be able to do it with their eyes shut. You'll be changing the belt too of course, so it should be all in one kit.Its not exactly difficult to do though . . .
Wrightpayne
Oilyhands of this parish is the man to advise what to do. May even be on his website DVA Power.Once you have the knowledge any engineer should be able to follow.Ian
Englishmaninwales
Later cylinder heads (with an auto tensioner) require a hole drilling and tapping to accept a manual tensioner. The cylinder head casting has the appropriate internal boss, just not drilled and tapped. This was done for me by a L7C member and was straight forward, with the cylinder head on the bench. I guess it could be done in situ with precautions against swarf.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted January 9, 2020 Leadership Team Share Posted January 9, 2020 IIRC when we did yours Malcolm the biggest task was keeping the drill square to the front of the head because we didn't have a bench drill handy. I think if I was doing it in situ it would definitely need a helper to watch that it remains aligned.
oilyhands
You need two holes, one M10 x 1.5 28mm deep, one M6 x 1.25 x 16mm deep , I have a template that I use to allow correct placement. If you don't get the holes perfectly perpendicular to the surface (particularly the M10 hole) then you risk the bolt/setscrew coming undone. Drilling and tapping isn't easy given the constraints of the installation and the positions of the holes and of course the possible damage caused by any dropped swarf. If you have stock cams or supersport cams then the autot tensioner is adequate and you can now buy metal roller versions that do not suffer the roller distortions prevalent on the stock plastic ones.Oily
nickh7
Have you talked to Dave at Gemzoe Motorsport? or Talk to Chris at Retro Sports Cars at Brighouse. He is MG Rover , MGF and K Series specialist
22daz
Ian, I think you have the wrong Dave. It's Dave Gemzoe that lives in West Yorkshire of Gemzoe Motorsport which has a different webpage.Daz
Wrightpayne
Daz,Dont think so - Oilyhands = Dave Andrews = DVA Power, widely regarded as the top K series engine builder in the UK.Ian
22daz
Not West Yorkshire though Ian. Oily DVA is in Milton Keynes, Dave Gemzoe is in West Yorkshire.Different parishes. Daz
Wrightpayne
Daz - 'parish' was a euphemism for BC member. Oily has done lots of these conversions so best placed to advise 'what' to do, so OP could be armed with the best advice before approaching someone local.I passed my geography CSE (just) so am aware Milton Keynes is not in Yorkshire :-)
22daz
My bad.. I thought you meant DVA of West Yorkshire parish, to take it to.Maybe I skim read it.. Congrats on the Geography thing anyway.Daz
