A7 OOH
Is lowering 7" Headlights (2005 model) a simple matter of removing the existing brackets and replacing them with low headlamp wishbone brackets. Will there be sufficient clearance between the headlamp and the noise cone? Are any wiring mods required?
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted December 24, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted December 24, 2019 Clearance should be OK. There should be at least one inch clearance between the inner edge of the light rim @ 9 o'clock & the nose cone.As for the replacement light support the upper wishbone will have to be removed to fit this.Wiring will not change just reconnecting to the existing 7" lights. Hopefully there will be some slack in the loom if required. The indicator pods should not be a problem either. You will have to find a solution for the hole in the nose cone. wiltsathome
I’m interested in this as 8 have just swapped my 2005 Roadsport for a 420r with small headlights that are low mounted and they are really dim compared with the high mounted 7” ones. Similarly, I’d be curious about feed back on the LED conversion for the small headlight units. Cheers Tony
CycleSi
If you can explain how I can put some photos up then I'll take some tomorrow. Easy step by step instructions are preferable.Thanks.
CycleSi
The conversion I have done with the lowering brackets was also to LED headlights and it is one of the best upgrades I've done.Once Jonathan has explained how to post photos then I'll take some of the brackets and the LED's themselves. Member Jonathan Kay Posted December 26, 2019 Member Share Posted December 26, 2019 What device, OS and browser would you like to use?Have a quick read through the Forum User Guide.Choose the method you prefer from: linking to images on another server, uploading with control of size ( ), and the (newish) simple uploading ( ). I suggest the last. Have a go with the method you choose and let us know where you get stuck.Jonathan
Bristol and Bath AR
I am also interested in seeing the photos of this modification. My objective being the take the headlight assemblies out of the "line of sight", but without losing illumination.
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted December 27, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted December 27, 2019 There was a batch of lowered headlight stays made up by Dave Morris a few years ago if you ask around for any unused pairs. They fitted in the same place as the original ones and through the nosecone and meant the 7" headlight nestled into the gap between sideskin and cycle wing. Fitted with a £30 LED bulb upgrade, its a very cheap and effective upgrade. Here's a photo of the Blackbird side on to show how unobtrustive they are with a close up of Trish's SLR to show how simple the bracket is. CycleSi
I'd be happy to do all of that if I knew what it meant, but it's far too complicated for me.I'm happy to take some photos on my iPhone though and email them to people if they PM with their email address. 7 wonders of the world
I made the last few batches of lowered brackets for Imperial cars that mount on the pinch bolt clamp, if theres enough interest I can make another batch up...?
Bristol and Bath AR
I'm interested if you make another batch. Do you have any issues with the Headlights moving around the axis of the mounting from the aerodynamic force exerted at higher speeds or vibration? Area Representative Nick Chan Posted December 28, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted December 28, 2019 Hi Brian, no problem with the headlight moving at all. They replace the previous angled bracket which had no additional steady and allowed more leverage on the pivot point than these flat brackets. A7 OOH
The headlights look very close to the nose cone, what sort of clearance are we looking at?
Wrightpayne
7WOW,Does your version have a hole underneath to route cables in the traditional way ie down the tube? Ian
A7 OOH
Yes they do Ian, when I look down the light from above it appears there is not a lot of room before the light would contact the nose cone, unless the new brackets (either the Caterham units or the ones made by 7 Wonders) move the lights more central?Once parked next to a 911 at Goodwood with A7 WOW
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted December 30, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted December 30, 2019 I can't recall the gap but the headlights have adequate space from the nosecone and certainly don't cause any issues removing the nosecone at all
