patibbitts
Wondering what Differential Ratio would have been installed by CC on my K Series SS 1600? The car is fitted with the 6 speed gearbox. Cruising in 6th at 60mph uses about 3000 rpm Just that I think motorway speeds are likely to be hard work for the engine and tiresome for the occupants? Is there a good 'compromise' diff ratio recommended, that still gives decent road performance but rather effortless cruising? Or am I just comparing it too much with modern 2K rpm / 80mph diesels? Thought appreciated,
Area Representative Nick Chan Posted July 16, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted July 16, 2019 Most likely it’s 3.62 final ratio. I think my supersport is at 4100 rpm for 70mph and not a particular problem for motorway cruising
Wrightpayne
Generally factory fit options are 3.9 in the 5 speeds and 3.6 in the 6 speed.
patibbitts
Thanks for the replies. I have a 3.1 diff - is that too high?
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted July 17, 2019 Leadership Team Share Posted July 17, 2019 For a 1600SS it would be way too high, you'll kill the performance. In fact even in a high powered K it would be rare to go any longer than 3.38.
p.mole1
I had a 1.4SS with a six speed box and it had a 3.9 diff
Area Representative Tin Man Posted July 17, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted July 17, 2019 My k Series 1999 came with a 3.92 diff, the Superlights at that time came with a 3.62 diff. Forgot to add,80mph in mine is around 5,000 rpm. 14” wheels with 185/60 tyres.
