AVO dampers - spherical bearings

I am about to fit new AVO front dampers with spherical bearings. Need some advice before starting.

Q1: There is a little play between the “ball” and the bearing part, will this cause any trouble in the future?

Q2: What is the right thing to use as spacers for taking up the difference in width between the mounting brackets and the spherical bearings?

Q3: Should the spacers be lengthened just to take up the play (a loose fit), or should the “ball” in the spherical bearing be firmly locked tight sideways (if so with what torque)?

I used steel tubing turned down on my lathe to suit when I fitted both front and rear dampers

Hmmm, I had no play in the joints at all. Nice tight smooth joint.

I would ask Avo about that.

I didn't have any play in the rose joint either.

I used an old bush as a spacer, just cut away the outer metal sheath and scrape off the rubber and you are left with a piece of tube with the right diameter to act as a spacer.

If you have steel Avos make sure you ‘waxoil’ them, mine rusted very quickly.

Thanks both. *thumbup*

Mikey, good tip on reuse of old bushes.

Removed the bearing from the damper and the bearing itself had no play at all. I was fooled by the fact that the bearing can move sideways in the “eye” of the damper. Will put some form of shim between the bearing and the locking ring to prevent this from happening.
