Caesar
Anyone fitted one or got any comments? How easy are they to calibrate?
SM25T
If you mean a speedo working on GPS ... this is a satnav or phone app like Waze. Very accurate on level ground, not quite so good on steep hills ... remember trigonometry from school. Nothing to calibrate.

ChrisC
Never tried a GPS speedo, all I know its they are not IVA compliant.
Caesar
I don't really care about IVA it's just that my K series 2006 one has died. We have tried changing the gearbox sender to no avail and temporarily swapped in another speedo which didn't work either. Since new senders / speedos are over £200 I thought this might be a solution.Surely someone has used one?

Area Representative Nick Chan Posted July 11, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted July 11, 2019 I think the problem is line of sight with the sky. Like a satnav dropping its signal when you go through a tunnel or perhaps if plenty of overhanging trees, the speedo will "drop out" for a brief spell. Most of the time it isnt a problem, but its just every now and again when you heading towards a speed camera!

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted July 12, 2019 Leadership Team Share Posted July 12, 2019 When my speedo drive failed a couple of days before heading to Le Mans I downloaded a speedometer app for my phone and mounted the phone in the centre of the steering wheel, worked great and actually updated speed at a better rate than my Garmin nav. Absolutely basic, no frills but works perfectly:
Wrightpayne
Arrr but would that be classed as using your phone whilst driving ;-)
SM25T
You can look at it, just not touch the controls
Stridey
On that note, I’ve recently loaded Satnav (Sygic) to an old Android phone, my much loved Sony Xperia. Just removed the sim, using WiFi mode to load the app. Long battery life (for a mobile)My old Tom Tom just wasn’t cutting it any more. And I’m pretty sure it’s GPS positioning is quicker, though in non mobile mode it’s not able to utilise cell towers as well. Although you could add a speed only app, Sygic does also display current speed and road speed limits quite clearly.
Frogman
I use a GPS speedo on my car as the speedo is not sufficiently accurate and it works fine, if anything it is probably more accurate than production car speedos that have a margin of error built in. My Garmin has a page with a prominent speedo and Waze has a speedo in the corner of of the app that advises when you are above the speed limit. It warns of most cameras and average speed traps but isn't always correct about identifying the correct speed limit so you still need your wits about you, think of it as an aid and not a 100% solution. Miltec
I have converted from an Old cable drive speedo to a new Stack electronic one. Then using https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/de/gps-speedo-signal-converterI have converted the standard speedo to gps, config was drive for two miles in setup mode.Using GPS app on phone the speed is +- 1 mph I guess the comments about tunnels etc are fair, but haven't had drop out even under heavy tree cover. Brightonuk
I went with this after the 90 degree drive went out for the second time https://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR338-GPS-03/1/GPS-Speedometer-160mphIt works...... maybe not as fast a response as the mechanical one but tested it on the street (with help from the wife) and after the 1/3 second delay (catch up) it read correctly.Have not had an issue of line of sight on the track or the road (that included heavy cloud cover)The also placed Caterham wording on the face so it looks kinda stock. Very easy to setup and offers lap times, timers, clock etc.

Jonathan Kay
As above, my GPS apps on an iPhone don't seem to drop out. I wonder if it has a peek at the accelerometers when the satellites are obscured.JonathanPS: The British Army had navigation devices in armoured vehicles that only used accelerometers in the short period between that being technically possible and the implementation of GPS. IIRC they were accurate to a few meters across a medium sized Middle Eastern country,
