ScottR400D
I would have thought the heavier oil was recommended with the idea of it staying a little more viscous at temperature and masking the noise better.I've been told that many of the oil and additive changes over recent years have been aimed at doing that but with limited success. Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted August 22, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted August 22, 2020 On the subject of oil used. I used to employ Castrol B373 90 GL5 in a Ford diff with good results so could be OK for the SPC LSD. Also Castrol Z LSD 90 GL5 is available though tends to be more advertised for the 'classic car'.They both come ready for use with additives included. Billy.Whizz
Phil and Olly recommend their own special formulation REF oils : LS90 GL5 for competition and road use.
Billy.Whizz
Should read RRT oils.
ScottR400D
#79. I think most of us have done that. Phil’s oil gets good reviews and it’s what I have in my SPC LSD.Steve of SPC wasn’t specific, just any decent quality 90 or 75/90 GL5
Doctor
Hi Noel, done my reading, you are right. The LSD additives are designed to allow the LSD plates to slip when not engaged thus decreasing the noise. Not much of an issue using non-LSD oil in the LSD (more noise), the issue is using the LSD oil (by mistake) in the synchro mesh gearbox.
7 wonders of the world
or indeed using GL5/6 oil....Castrol B373 in my LSD never had a problem, about £9 / LtrRedline MTL in the gearbox
Doctor
MTL in 6 speed felt like a bag of spanners. Not happy.
aerobod - near CYYC
I've tried Redline MTL, MT85 and MT90 in my 6-speed. The MTL felt a bit graunchy, the MT90 was somewhat baulky when cold but the MT85 seems just right with only a bit of notchiness putting it into 1st gear, but very slick changes on both road and track otherwise. ScottR400D
I changed to MTL after a year, so 4 years now. Smoother changes than original oil, seems quiet enough to me. Drained the box recently after 18 months, when I removed prop for checking. The oil was still like new and nothing significant on mag drain plug. Suits me. Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted August 23, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted August 23, 2020 Surprisingly Halfords 80w90 GL4 in the six speeder since built - 7 years. Good slick change cold & hot, quiet & no balking from 1st to 2nd which I know can be a six speeder issue when cold.At last service oils still clean as the day it went in.When I get the SPC LSD installed I will go back to Castrol B373. John Vine
...Halfords 80w90 GL4...Made by Comma, I believe, as was CC's own-label pre-Motul offering.JV
ScottR400D
No surprise Geoff. As John said, made by Comma and a very good oil. I seem to remember feeling the MTL was slightly smoother on changes but nothing hugely significant.
