mossy7
Aaarrrggghhh! I have a 2018 S3 that was supplied from the factory on 15 inch wheels. I have fitted 14 inch CC supplied Minilite style wheels and 185/60/R14 tyres ( same size as fitted by CC) and they rub on the wing stays. How come? Surely 15 inch stays woukd have been ok??? rj
Tazio,How do you bend a tyre?
SM25T
Do remove the cycle wings before you bend the stays. How does the offset of the wheel compare between the 15" and 14" ... ?
SM25T
In your other post ... you mentioned changing to 13" wheels ?
mossy7
I am planning 2 sets... 13s for driving..14s for touring
ScottR400D
What’s the wheel offset and the tyre section width in comparison? Where do they rub?
mossy7
No idea about offset but both wheels are Caterham OEM- 14 inch classics and 15 Orcus.tyres are 195/50/R15 ZZS and fit fine and 185/60/R14 NS-2R and rub on rear most wing stay badly. I stupidly thought it would be fine.
SM25T
Lay wheel on ground with outer face downwards. Lay a flat edge across the top of the tyre and measure between mating face of wheel centre and underside of straight edge. Compare with other wheel type. mossy7
Thing is, CC supplies the 14 classic on 185/60/14 so it should fit! I can only think that because I ordered it with 15s I got different wing stays.
SM25T
Never assume anything with CC. What is the difference in offset (heights) as above?
mossy7
not checked yet. The wing stays are getting filed!
SM25T
Filed ... that won't give enough clearance ... they are hollow tubes. You need to remove wings and bend them. Be aware that tyres also flex side to side under load.
mossy7
In which case I'm knackered then.
SM25T
Spacers ? .... or bend the stays ?
andydavy
i had same problem. 13 and 14" tyres do not fit under 15" stays. you can just about bend the stays or buy the correct stays.
mossy7
Will consider the spacers. I know that 175/55/13 fitted. I was hoping to fit 185/60/13. Oh damn.
SM25T
That on line tyre size comparison site is a useful tool
mossy7
It certainly is.. I used it to pick these tyres which suggested this was a size for size match with my 15s, however, I didn't account for the wheel offset/ design changing. These 14s will not fit with my current stays. End. Fiddlesticks. Thanks for all your help. New thread in chitchat is pending to resolve my wheel fettish/issue! Jim 123
You mention that the rub is on the "rearmost" wing stay. Is there any possibility that the wing stay fixing may not be fully seated in the recess?

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted May 12, 2019 Leadership Team Share Posted May 12, 2019 mossy7, this is not rocket science, it's fairly straightforward to solve. The wing stay is mounted at two points, inside centre of the hub, and the top wishbone ball joint. Start by loosening the locknut on the top wishbone ball joint then apply inward pressure to the wingstay and re-tighten the locknut, this may give you a little additional inward movement. If this doesn't solve it, as already suggested remove the wing and carefully bend the wing stay to give the clearance you need, then refit the wing. Stu.
