This may help to shed some light on how the rad set-up has changed over the years.

When I built my S3 in 2008, I fitted a cowl behind the rad, with the fan mounted on the back:

After a shunt in 2014, CC repaired the chassis (long front).  They ditched the rear cowl, and instead fitted the fan on a subframe immediately behind the rad.  This is how it looks at the moment:

To enable the back of the fan assembly to clear the ARB, CC replaced the original top (short, 25mm) bobbins with long (40mm) ones:

For info, the dimensions of this rad are:

Width = 430mm
Depth = 52mm (header), 42mm (body)
