Haddock
HiJust changing the oil on my Duratec wet sump 360R . Having searched it looks like the sump nut is 32 mm on on the passenger side. What am not clear about is do I need a replacement washer when I replace the nut ? It seems that some people have different types of washer : not sure re mine as I have'nt started yet Thanks in advance
Jonathan Kay
If it's a copper washer you can restore its mechanical properties by cooking it.Recent discussion of size and part numbers.Full search of the archives.JonathanPS: If there's any problem getting a good seal there are lots of advocates of Dowty washers. ChrisC
It’s a rubber o ring seal behind the sump bolt. Ford don’t sell them, only a complete replacement bolt, which I think is wasteful. You can find them on eBay. Ford Focus sump plug seal. Normally they can be reused a couple of times without problem, I didn’t change mine for the first two oil changes. garybee
32mm would be huge, are you sure about that? Do Duratecs have something strange about the sump? That's more the size of a hub nut. Be very fast to drop the oil if so.
John Vine
The 32mm plug (blue, probably) retains the finger filter. The sump plug is the other side of the sump (15mm), and rather than a washer, it has a rubber seal under the head. When refitting:Stainless sump plug: smear of copper grease on the threads, then torque to 25lbft (34Nm)Blue plug (with alloy washer): smear of copper grease on the threads, then torque to 30lbft (41Nm)JV

Haddock
Thanks All The oil is now draining.Particularly appreciate the guidance on here re size location and torque ! Could have been interesting without it. I've just finished changing the oil on my 1970 Lotus Elan , having a workshop manual for that car makes such a difference to all the jobs I do on that car. My next piece of research will be relating to checking the Mazda gearbox oil : I already note there are a number of threads to read before I can start to get my head around how to do it. Jim 123
With the Mazda box, the filler / level plug is on the LH side and the bolt has a square head, not to be mistaken for the hex head bolt that is located directly below it. If you pull back the carpet in the front of the passenger footwell you should find a large rubber grommet that will give you direct access. Whilst it is not a routine service item, the Mazda box has a separate top up for the selector turret which is accessed by removing the gearshift. This seldom needs attention but worth checking if you ever have the trim cover off the driveline tunnel.
