Oscillating Oil Pressure Gauge

Recommended Posts

Did a half day track day on Saturday (it pi**ed down),. I have a wet sump and after I saw the pressure drop to only 1 bar at idle (normally 1.5 -2) driving restored it. Today on start up it was less than 1! but after 10 secs it rocketed to 3.5 (usual on start up until it warms up), flapped a bit around 2 and settled to the norm.

Is it the sender, loss of oil (replaced 1/2 litre as rocker gasket is currently ill fitting) or is it on the way out???

Disconnect the wire to the oil pressure sender and touch it to an earth with the ignition switched on. The meter needle should go right over to the high pressure side. If it does the meter is probably OK. It's more likely to be the sender playing up. My water temperature gauge was doing the same thing as your oil gauge a couple of weeks ago, so I changed the sender and hey presto - all is calm again.
