glasgow
Since last summer I notice on harsh acceleration the RPM gauge doesn't move smoothly but rather "jumps in steps rather than moving smoothly". May be best described as moving like the "arms of the clock". I didn't notice anything wrong with the engine sound or how the car drives. ie on acceleration the car accelerates smoothly with no hesitations.I had a look at the connections at the rear of the gauge and all looks fine.Any idea what is the reason for this please? and is this something needs fixing or just live with it?Thank youAhmed
Member Jonathan Kay Posted April 11, 2019 Member Share Posted April 11, 2019 Does it ever drop to zero? All other instruments working normally?I suspect that it's a fault within the instrument but it would be worth disconnecting, cleaning and reconnecting the contacts. They are repairable.Jonathan

Member Jonathan Kay Posted April 12, 2019 Member Share Posted April 12, 2019 I'd send it off for inspection and repair. And I'd choose John Ostick because I was pleased with how he sorted mine, but they all seem to have good reports.Jonathan
glasgow
Would the car be still drivable with no RPM gauge or I need to wait until it is back?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted April 12, 2019 Member Share Posted April 12, 2019 What model and age of Seven?...It shouldn't be a problem on most cars: insulate the connector on any wire you've exposed and tape the loose end somewhere convenient so that it doesn't flap about. Not needed for MoT inspection or roadworthiness. But changing gear will have to use other inputs! :-)Jonathan
revilla
On a K Series it won't be a problem. On later cars, the tacho contains electronics to drive other instruments, so removing the tacho will also knock out other instruments.
