New Kit/tools question

Hi all,

Apologies in advance if this is one of those questions that has been answered already numerous times, but I think that I have read somewhere that there is a register of tools that might be available to hire/loan to members? I have tried searching, but cant find anything.

My kit is now due to arrive mid/end of April and one thing that I don't have is an engine crane/leveller. My fall back position is to buy one, but I don't think that I will have much need for it again.  If there was one near Chippenham/Swindon in Wiltshire, it would make sense that I hire it for the day.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks.

Have you made contact with your local area group as I am sure they will be able to help in many ways? I would also consider getting a cheap dolley truck to have your engine placed on when it is delivered.  It makes life a lot easier during the build to shuffle things around your garage if you don't have a crane to hand.

I need some A/F ring spanners to help with my rebuild.

Previously Ive used my A/F sockets on one end of the fastener and used the closest matching metric ring spanner on the other end, but this is obviously not good practice.  My socket set is all Halfords Professional, and it appears they don't do A/F ring spanners in this range.   Any recommendations before I run the gauntlet of eBay quality?  I don't want to spend a fortune, so probably Halfords Professional/Draper end of the market rather than Teng etc.

Any suggestions?

I would look for a combination A/F spanner set, not just ring.    On amazon looks like you can get a Draper set for £22 1/4 all the way to 7/8.   The only specialist A/F tool you need these days on a Metric chassis is a deep thin wall 3/4 socket for the A-Frame to Dedion bolts nut.

Thanks for that Shaun, Id not managed to find it previously.

Im being a bit thick here, but does a spanner size, ie 1/2, relate to the shank diameter of the bolt, or the size of the head/nut?  I've gone through the bolt list on line and there are only 5 A/F sizes -  3/8, 1/2, 5/16, 1/4 & 7/16.  Does this relate directly to the spanner sizes within a set?  Looking at some of the sets, at least half the spanners in a set are unlikely to be needed so I might be better off buying them separately.  But I need to understand whether '1/2' on the bolt list is the shank diameter or size of the head.

You will find that you mostly need a maybe 3 or 4 spanner sizes but you won't save much buying them individually and once you factor in postage and the fact you can get 10% off at Halfords and you get a lifetime warranty, I'd just buy the set. If you're feeling flush, a set of ratchet spanners as well is a very useful addition.
