Road repairs

Midnight

Recommended Posts

Read in the paper yesterday that over 40% of councils have been siphoning off money meant for road repairs and improvementrom to pay for other things (nothing new there then), and judging by the state of many roads in Essex it would appear that councils here must be at the forefront of this practice. What really annoys me is that as I pick my way past dangerously deep potholes, often having to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid ripping my suspension off, I pass newly erecterd signs (near the Ford offices at Dunton) telling me that on a long clear straight stretch of road the speed limit has been reduced as a safety and air quality improvement measure!!! What a load of b+@**+ks. Perhaps they should be fixing the roads instead of putting up these meaningless and downright misleading signs. Grrrr.

Next they'll be downgrading roads and speed limits instead of repairing.

Ben Lovejoy posted this on ringers....

Excuse the off-topic and UK-only post, but I've only just found out

about this, so rallying opposition to it is urgent ...

I wouldn't accuse the Government of trying to sneak this through on

the quiet, as we all know they are honourable men, but on Tuesday

Parliament is set to debate the Railways and Transport Safety Bill.

Nothing in there to concern road-users, right? Well, except they've

tacked on a small amendment. This amendment would establish a "rural

road hierarchy". This is something the Govt has proposed before, with

roads defined as 'country lanes' having a national speed limit of

40mph. This would mean a ban for doing 67mph along them. They backed

off at the time, but it is now being sneaked thr- I mean, efficiently

tacked onto the back on an entirely unrelat- That is, closely related

bill on Tuesday.

If you would like to let your MP know how you would like him to vote

on this bill, you can do so via:

http://www.faxyourmp.com/

If your MP is Labour, you may also care to *politely* know your

thoughts on this kind of ploy.

Just stick in your postcode, it will tell you who your MP is and

automatically address a fax to them. Type the text of your fax, hit

send, get an email confirmation, click the link and it's done.

Noticed at the weekend that a local country road (mostly open country, with only the occasional junction, farm etc and once part of my favourite Caterham run) no longer had 40 limit signs posted. These signs appeared a year or so back, and I was always puzzled about the reason - nothing obviously dangerous about the road (no different from any other similar road, anyway). Perhaps they were part of a trial of the "rural road hierarchy" mentioned above, but I wonder why the limit has been changed back to the "national" value. Location of the road is north of Swindon, just south of the Fairford air base (now full of B52s....) between Kempsford and the A419 - anyone know anything about it?
