Brightonuk
The engine has been rather noisy and I finally took it to a reputable race shop to find out if it was a real issue or just a Ford Zetec They put her on the dyno and made 180 @ 7200 before it started to drop off but showed it was running very lean. They said the noise could be piston slap so they dumped the oil filter and the oil looks like silver paint. At that point the assumption was a main bearing was the issue and a rebuild was discussed or a new power plant, both = $$$$.So I left after being told to drive easy (After red lining her on a Dyno) and we can price rebuilt power plants vs a rebuild. On the drive back home 56 Miles at a steady 62mph I come to realize that the Dyno test was not the best thing to do.... (1/4 mile to go) bang and the engine sounds like a a tin can with a rock in it. My guess is a main bearing has gone so I assume the choice has been made and a new engine? The question is, the engine is a Ford racing Zetec 2.0 that had been bumped to a 11.1 compression Kent Rally cams, HC Cosworth forged pistons, oversize valves, race ported. and on with all this work done on the engine should I try to have it rebuilt? (did nurse her home so I may have caused even more damage)If I go for a reconditioned power plant (not a Ford Racing option) is it wise to reuse any salvageable HP parts from the old engine and use in a reconditioned unit?If I go for the engine swap can I drop a 2.3 Eco boost in place of the souped up 2.0? Will I get the same HP output? If I can go with a 2.3 Eco boost what issues will I face going from a Zetec 2.0 to a 2.3 Eco boost? A little broad but hopefully I can get some input as to my best option.

elie boone
A few years ago i bought a 2.0 Zetec engine from Dunnell, it made 190 bhp and he claims that only the cams had been changed. http://www.dunnellengines.com/zetec_e.phpi would strip the engine and see what damage there is, maybe you only need to have the cranck regrind or just replaced, and a clean of all components in a professional parts cleaner. nickh7
1.6eco boost up to 320bhp if you want it. Talk to Dave at Gemzoe Motorsport for options on this engine.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted March 7, 2019 Leadership Team Share Posted March 7, 2019 If a big end or main bearing was on the way out there should have been a noticeable drop in oil pressure particularly when hot?
Brightonuk
Oil pressure was up an down depending on the rpm and it was always a big swing from idle to 3K RPM
p.mole1
You should be able to inspect the bearings without removing the engine. I would have thought you would be able to remove the sump pan and gain access from below, although I have no experience of Ford engines
Mike Biddle
As per other posters, you do not currently have enough information to come to any conclusions, get any quotes, or make any decisions. If you can get it out of the car and take the sump off that should allow enough of an inspection to gather required information/quotes and make an informed decision. Are you in a position to do that/do you have facilities/mechanical skills to make an assessment or at least take and post some pics?If you had the engine out now I am on Crawley today, going to Stuttgart over the weekend to retro classics show, would be prepared to delay return to North Somerset and take a look on Monday if it helps. I'm assuming of course that your location is indicated by your posting name?
p.mole1
If your crank isn't damaged It would just cost you the price of new bearing shells and gaskets, I doubt you have any problems with your pistons

Bricol
An engine is an engine is an engine where ever you are you are though. Ask around, find a reputable shop and get 'em to take a look. If you are lucky, a good clean out, regrind the crank, new shells and off you go - but get the leaness sorted.I think they sold the zetec in the USA, so parts and knowledge should be around.I'll be in Texas in April - I'm already carrying vernier cam wheels and forged pistons for a Lancia integrale .. . so if you find you need anything, as long as it's not too heavy, it'll should be easy enough to post on. Brightonuk
Thank you Bricol Hopefully have it in the shop later this week then a couple of weeks from them to strip and see what damage I did driving it If I did screw up the piston the car came with a set of JE Pistons for the Zetec which will save me $700Not meaning to go on and on but I looked down the throttle bodies and I can see all four valves does this indicate better news? Brightonuk
Here's the update on the engineI was informed that is should be installed car in the car today A few pics not very interesting but this is all they sent meNew (remanufactured Crank and bearings (hope these last a bit longer)JE Pistons (.20 over.) The picture of the box (in the previous post did not contain JE pistons as I had assumed but were the original (unused) Zetec pistons........now for sale. Oil Pan Baffle (cracked)Replacement Windage tray where the connecting rods were apparently contacting (that must have cost me 15hp)And finally nearly finished Degreeing the Kent Cams Once installed they will dyno test it and then she is back homeI was told no track days for at least 500 miles of easy driving Cost so far Parts $4,465.47That included a used block as they could not source a Zetec Cranck (no longer available) and they thought the block was too badly damaged and could not be bored out. That was not the case hence the .20 over pistons and rings Labor $3,335.00I was messaging KitKat back and forth (as he also had a Zetec rebuild) and I told him for the $$ I have spent on this car purchase price and work I really could of imported a 620.It makes me annoyed looking back at the costly mistakes that I have made:Crap paint job had to be redone by another shopEngine work that did not identify the main bearing issue. And a plethora of stuff in between that was farmed out to people/shops that I assumed knew WTF they were doing but turned out were clueless. The cost of this rebuild would of been acceptable is it was not for all the other work. I should prepare a spreadsheet as to how much I have spent but I do not want to depress myself. And if the wife finds out.......OMG.I love my Caterham but for all the $$ I could of hired Julia Roberts for a week stayed at the Beverly Hills and would still be smiling

Brightonuk
After almost 4 weeks in the shop the car is almost readyRebuild the 2.0 Zetec including replacing the crank, rods pistons and with a small over bore, cleaned up the head new megasquirt ignition system replaced a bearing in the TWM throttle bodies here is the result on 92 octane pump gas (they are going to drain the tank and use 100 octane later today but I do not expect much of a difference in the output).Unfortunately I do not know if these figures justify the enormous expense I have had to hide from the wife.I am unsure of the standard output from a Zetec any thoughts someone tell me it was worth the $$?
