CtrMint
Afternoon,Quick query, seeking clarification regarding fitting my side mirrors to the doors. Yes I'm not putting them on the windscreen, I've checked and the IOM test won't require fitting to the screen, so I can side step that step.So the 2015 assembly manual says "Locate the holes pre-drilled in the metal frames (approximately 130mm from the front corner and 104mm apart) then drill through the material with a sharp 5mm drill."As far as I can tell my doors don't have any holes under the material, but do have a cut out section around the size of the mirror base. Has the door design been revised since the assembly guide was published?I'd also really appreciate some photos of recent installs, factory or otherwise. The fixings supplied with the mirrors are only self tappers, which I'm slightly suspicious of too. Thanks
PeterM
Lack of holes under the material a bit strange and self tappers definitely not right. Cross-cut headed bolts with plastic (IVA) nut covers on inside are the norm.
Garth
I would consider other options before drilling the doors - I think there are better alternatives out there? You could always mount them on the windscreen stanchion for the approvals and then put on what you want later? No damage done to the stanchion doing this as the IVA mirrors are just mounted in an existing screw hole! The mounts that use the hinges have the twin advantages of fewer vibrations and they are also higher so easier to see over the rear wheel arches. All in my humble opinion of course!! CtrMint
Hi,Any chance of some photos from some factory cars? Thanks
ScottR400D
If you search ‘Caterham wing mirror images’ there are some showing the standard mirror on the screen. My cat was IVA’d with the mirrors on the screen, then I fitted Racetech ones to the doors later. They’re smaller, shake less and look better. You have to take the base off the standard ones to fit to screen but it’s easy enough.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 23, 2019 Leadership Team Share Posted February 23, 2019 I agree with Garth, get it through the IVA with the screen mount adapters then afterwards fit a pair of Eccles' hinge mount brackets with SPA mirrors ... in carbon fibre of course! If you go this route later you'll regret having drilled the doors.Stu.
pugwash
I just kept them on the windscreen. Then when you run with no doors you still have mirrors.
Collidog
These are the best pics I can offer prior to removing the door mirrors and replacing with screen-mounted Racetech ones. The pics at least show the general position of the mirrors and bolts. Cheers
CtrMint
Are the Racetech ones smaller? I'm conscious of maximizing rear visibility for bikes on the IOM, they don't always help themselves by riding too close and in your blind spot. ScottR400D
They are, but they’re convex and, if on the doors, are close enough to give a good field of view. My originals vibrated a lot, the Racetech don’t seem to anything like as much.

CtrMint
which of the racetech mirrors are you recommending, I'm looking here.https://www.demon-tweeks.com/eu/search/shop-by/q/racetech%20mirror/
Collidog
They are great little mirrors. No vibration unlike the original door-mounted mirrors that I found to be totally inappropriate for safety in this little car (coming from motorcycles myself). Small though they are, they give a good clear view on both sides. You want the single seater mirror - you can get LHS & RHS. You’ll also need the mirror mount shown in the link you sent. One kit is enough to mount two mirrors. I found this link helpful when I chose/fitted mine. Just be careful cutting down the fixing bolts so they do not contact the windscreen glass. https://csr175.wordpress.com/2013/11/24/mirrors/
CtrMint
Thanks, I've gone what that. I do recall driving Oakmere's 620S and commenting on how bad the mirrors were, not because of the angle or size, just that they vibrated so much to the point they were useless. I just hope I don't screw up the install and crack the screen....
Collidog
I spent a lot of time checking the final length of the fixing bolt. If it helps I’ll undo mine and measure it. Just let me know.
AdrianC
You can alter the height of the door mirror which brings it much closer to the door and also gives much better visibility over the rear wing. Any vibrations are significantly reduced. I have had the Racetec mirrors in the past and found the door would often hit the mirrors when fitted to the windscreen knocking them out of alignment. You also cant fully open the doors!
ScottR400D
The door issue applies to any mirror mounted on the screen. I think the Racetech mirrors vibrate less because they’re so much lighter. They’re also much better looking, imo.
CtrMint
I'm not a fan of the standard mirrors, so having something a little more, well sporty looking wouldn't be a bad thing. It's cost me 70 quid for the mirrors and mounts from Demon Tweaks so not a massive deal. I can talk to Oakmere when I visit them about how the factory ones are mounted to the door should I want to in future. To be honest I can't find appropriate hardware anyway, so I'd need to order some black countersunk bolts and black nylocs before proceeding with factory supplied units.I also have the aeroscreen stuff, so I'll need to look at mounting the mirrors on that too. But that can wait.
Garth
I think Stu's suggestion is about the best mirror solution out there at the moment! Here is a link to Eccles mirror mounts and the SPA mirrors come in a few different sizes but I would keep it relatively small and make sure they are convex!Hope you are on the road soon
CtrMint
hmm, I have the SPA mirrors already, I think they are the ones supplied for the aeroscreen. So I could try that solution too.

Jim 123
RE #18 it occurred to me that the nuts on the inside of the car for the mirror base are black dome heads, exactly the same as for the door hinges. It may be that the mirror fasteners have been bagged with the hinge fixings
