Roger Cumming
Our engine is currently at our friends Northampton Motorsport. Gasket let go on no 3 cylinder, let water in of course and ruined liner. Advice is a rebuild, approx £5000 +vat.(taking out, doing, putting back)Before we embark on this anyone got one for sale, 1600 K, ported, verniers etcApril's looming!!Best to allRoger & Adam
TomB
£6000 to rebuild a K series? Even include fitting and removal of the engine that sounds very expensive. It only 1-2 hours to remove an engine. Is it something special?
Alan Bowler
Hi Roger, Not sure I'd want to spend 5K on an aging class 2/3 engine. When my 1.6K left one of its pistons and a chunk of the block somewhere near Goodwood, decision to move to an unported 1.8 seemed pretty simple to me (head was damaged also unfortunately). I added forged pistons too for peace of mind. A refurbed 1.8 perhaps with stronger internals would be a lot cheaper/simple, and keep the ported 1.6 head on your shelf for another day. Would also be quite valuable I think as well.Just don't buy an engine from ebay/pistonheads without proof the head isn't soft, and waste months in the garage creating a very efficient mushroom soup generator as it fails on first start, before calling in the experts to bail you out .AB

Graham Howard
Hi RogerI would echo the comments here, not worth spending that sort of money on a 1.6K.Why not put a wanted post in the marketplace section, a 1.8 with a standard head and the cams you already have would be just as good for competing with in class 2.Hope you get something sorted. Area Representative Richard Price Posted February 5, 2019 Area Representative Share Posted February 5, 2019 Or, find a reasonable standard 1600, and transplant your complete head onto it.if I were spending 6k, I'd want an awful lot more than the same again....... mikes
Hi Roger,I do have a spare 1800 sitting in the garage that survived being abused by the very same Mr Bowler who managed to blow up his own engine. It appears that I had rather more success with it than the badger, but then he was obviously being careful I was planning on keeping it put the 7 back to its original spec at some time in the future, but if you are stuck you are welcome to borrow it. It has been sitting in the garage for a few years, but was OK last time it was used.Let me know if you want it.Mike
Drumster
Mike,Are you sure you don't want to put it back in your car this year?
Alan Bowler
"Badger"... Mike - did they let you out of your mobile retirement home long enough for you to get the Southampton "Budget Rioja Warehouse", or do they have a 2-1 on rum fudge at the garden centre again? That engine had clearly been adjusted before I picked it up, or by the "installation team" (I use that term loosely) you sent over.Roger - good luck. Mike's engine was very solid, but just check the cam timing maybe. Of course, I never took it above 6000...
Roger Cumming
Hi Mike, many thanks for the offer. We are getting the car back from Northampton this week. They haven't done anything except take the head off. We are then going to have a careful look. Andrew Revill is coming over to help. We will probably take it out because I want to check clutch etc. If we find it is all rubbish, then we will be in touch.Agreed Richard. My motto has always been, no pain without gain!!Alan, I presume you meant 8500.......Best to allRoger
mikes
Roger, will send you a separate message, but although I am pleased Alan didn't overstress the engine perhaps it just needs a better driver to get the best out of it I am afraid I will miss the opener at Goodwood, so I leave it to you Chris to set the new record - although my Chris might come instead to try out all the new bits.........CheersMike
Mark Durrant
RogerI hope you can fix your engine and just to let you know that Mike's engine is EU3 so might not be a straightforward install as I suspect your car is EU2.Mark
