CtrMint
Apologies for the other 3 posts, not sure what happened there, it seem to cut the content and post 3 times. Is it normal to need to insert wheel bearings into the rear hub carriers? I seem to have a set of bearings which would appear to fit the carriers, although I cant find any mention in the manual. If so any recommendations on fitting, they are of course really tight and I don't have a press. Thanks all. rj
I would imagine you can wack them in with a drift and a hammer. Just be caraful only to "touch" the outer race.Or go to a local garage and ask them to do it.
DJ.
They always used to come assembled, but sometimes virtually without grease.Probably best to check this if this is normal now first. When I replaced mine, I put the alloy hub in the oven at 150C for half an hour and they pressed in easily by hand using an old bearing to push them. CtrMint
I'll go put them in the microwave to speed things up ;-)
Wrightpayne
Dishwashers are good for cleaning cylinder heads apparently! Just need a quick spray of oil once out to stop the salt corroding anything.Ian
CtrMint
well that didn't go well. Screw it up and slightly bent one of the inner races, its jammed at angle. So much for basic tools. grrrrr
rj
I doubt the race has been bent, they normally are quite hard (or you've not been gentle ).To get it free if it has jammed you need to wack it from the back, once it has jammed you can get it no further in without damaging something.I was not aware that the carrier is now made from alloy. If it is heating up to 150 degrees is a good idea as alloy expands twice as much as iron.
CtrMint
its only slight damage, but to be honest I have no idea whether slight is significant or not with this stuff. I'll post an image in a second, please comment away.

rj
That's crap - it's the seal that's damaged. The bearing needs to be replaced :-(

rj
If you can tell me the outer diameter (accurately) I can turn out a tool to wack it in with from billet alloy and post it to you (it'll take a week or so to get there as I'm in Denmark. rj
Dunno, probably not, but when you get it from there you get the right item, so it often ends up cheaper than trying to source form alternative suppliers.
CtrMint
i just can't get the old one out, so looks like I will have to go see a garage, as well as get another,
rj
You obviously have to hit it from behind and see if you can straighten it up.
CtrMint
its actually straight at the moment, but I just cant get it out. I cant really get sufficient purchase on it.
Jim 123
Can you position the carrier so that the fixing lugs are supported on each side, say between a couple of bricks on your garage floor, and so that it is facing with the bearing hanging down and able to fall free. Get a length of wood / billet that will sit on the rear face of the bearing evenly from above. Wallop the bit of wood with a heavy lump hammer and it should come free. BigCol
Depending how well you’re getting on with Derek, he might be able help you out... certainly worth asking him. (Just don’t mention Palace’s home, or away, form! )
Tazio
When you get the new bearings do 2 things. 1 Put the bearings in the freezer, leave overnight. 2. Put the hub in the oven, low heat 30 mins or more.
