Rob D.
Good afternoon, I'm the new owner of a 1999 SLR 1.8 VHPD. I received the original bill of sale from Caterham in the history file and it states that the car is Superlight #89. Can anyone tell me why some of the cars have a cockpit badge and some of them don't ? Thanks in advanceRob
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted November 5, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted November 5, 2018 Rob, the dash plaques were supplied with the kit to be fitted by the customer, it's not unknown for a plaque to have never actually been fitted, or sometimes even removed by a previous owner when they've sold the car (as happened with mine). Some time ago a few of us had plaques made up but they're not quite the same as the original, there's also a possibility that Caterham are now prepared to have some plaques re-made, I was trying to get this done 12 months ago with the help of Martin Phipps but as yet haven't followed it up any further. It might be useful of there's a group of us that need them to get them made at the same time. I've no idea what the cost would be.Stu.
Rob D.
Stu,Thanks for the help on this. I'm interested if there are any other SLR owners who want to get retrospective plaques made. I guess we just need to know the OEM supplier name or get the artwork. Can I register on the Caterham register website without a plaque ? Thanks , Rob. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted November 5, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted November 5, 2018 Yes, just send me a photo, we don't have #89 yet. I've had issues doing updates because of some changes at the hosting company but I think I'm close to having it sorted. If we have a small group that need plaques I can talk again to Martin Phipps, it'll be arranged through Caterham though so there will be a cost.Stu. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted November 5, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted November 5, 2018 Anyone else?
TomB
Do you even have to go to Caterham? It hardly complex artwork to photograph/scan/digitize and reproduce. Could a sign maker or engraver do something if Caterham couldn't / wouldn't help? While your asking then, can you see if they'll do another run of the yellow/ green 16 Valve nose badge! Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted November 5, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted November 5, 2018 Ha ha that might be wishful thinking!Three of us had plaques made based on a photograph which I then photoshopped to have the different numbers included, the plaques aren't really the same as the originals though and for the value of the car I'd prefer an "original" plaque if i can get one.Stu. Rob D.
I'm interested in a good quality plaque from Caterham - but not at any price. I think if we can get a high resolution photo of an original plaque with good lighting then we should be able to go to a specialist and get some re-produced. I'm happy to investigate this if the Caterham OE route closes.
andymal
If the price is reasonable I will be interested in a plaque that is close to original quality. Also, I wonder if the first few SLRs did not have plaques and Caterham only thought of it during early marketing. I have No.2 which was the press and Nurburgring car and it has never had a plaque fitted but the press car would surely have done if it had been thought of at that point. bosshogg
I have the original non fitted dash plaque from superlight #175 and the superlight stickers in a folder, if they would be easier to copy. I am one of the guilty few who didn't fit theirs on completion of the build! Alastair

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted November 6, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted November 6, 2018 Brunel Engraving show an example of a Superlight R plaque, are you suggesting they originally made them?Stu.
bosshogg
No Stu, I don't know anything about them. I just saw that they had that example which does look of a reasonable quality, and their pricing looks reasonable. Alastair
Rob D.
Good evening, Thanks for the response. Can you confirm the material type of the original plaque that you have please ? If it is Stainless steel - then it looks like you've found a good source. Rob
bosshogg
Hi Rob. The original is stainless. Will confirm size in the morning. Alastair
Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted November 7, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted November 7, 2018 Using my original SLR plate as a reference, the Brunel Engraving looks pretty good to me... a bit of trimming and would definitely look the part. bosshogg
Size of mine is 950mm x 550mm.Brunel looks to have minimum order of ten units, but maybe worth asking about fewer if they already have the artwork.Just don't forget about all the inverse lightness you will be adding!!
