rj
I've been told that the best oil is a Shell Spirax S3 80W - not to be confused with the S3 80W/90 (!)Not easy to find; had to buy a can of 20lThis is purely a GL4 oil; don't use anything else (not a GL4/5!!) Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted November 3, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted November 3, 2018 Any good GL4 transmission oil across the accepted range will do. Multigrades are flexible but you can use a single grade like an 80W. Caterham used to recommend this way back in days of yore.My six speeder has Halfords 80w/90 in it since build with no problems. There is no definitive service period for the changing of gearbox oil but I would suggest every six to eight years depending on usage. That is if the car does the 'regular' Seven annual mileage of 3000 to 4000 miles.More important is changing the LSD oil. I do that religiously every 3 to 4 years irrespective of use or mileage. CycleSi
Redline MTL is considered to be the best oil for this gearbox.

rj
That's new for me. It used to be the Spirax stuff Phil recommended but that may be years ago.(Good this was not just a link to an old post)
aerobod - near CYYC
Redline MT90 (which is 75w90) also works well, depending on how hot the car gets. For trackdays when the temperature was above 25°C I found the gearbox became noisy using MTL or with the standard 75w80. The gear change with MT90 does require some patience when ambient is near 0°C, until the gearbox has warmed up a bit.
Wrightpayne
I’ve used Redline MTL (as suggested in numerous previous threads) and comma as recommended by Caterham and TBH couldnt tell any difference!I use Comma currently as its more readily available.Ian
ChrisC
Yep - had the misfortune to need a rebuild of my 6sp last year under warranty, where he recommended MTL, so that was Jan 2018 info.
mph
Old topic — but, how much oil does the 6sp gearbox take? Does one just fill it until it spill out of the side-access fill port? Thanks folks!

mph
And you reminded me to actually check the assembly manual (that you kindly sent to me three years ago 😆 🤦♂️) … Quote Add approximately 2 litres of gearbox oil to the gearbox until it dribbles out of the filler hole. Replace the filler plug.
