Yep have diagram

And you've identified the far ends of the runs front and rear?

Connected or not which is the concerning bit

It all helps in localising the fault!

If it's only when the switch is thrown and unaffected by whether the light unit is connected you've already narrowed it down a lot. Now add some heuristics:

  1. If the fault only occurred after some recent work it's likely to be close to that work.
  2. Faults are pretty rare within runs of wire that look OK on the outside and don't include connectors.
  3. Faults in exposed bits are more common than elsewhere. But it's still worth checking the connections around the back of the switch.

Side lights are separated by side so both sides have their own fuse, if you unplug the front and rear and the fuse is fine then you know the electrics are fine just up to that point, if you plug in the front and the fuse stay's fine you plug in the rears and if the fuse blows you need to search from the rear plug on to any abnormality.

Maybe not your problem, but worth a thought, I had a problem with a rear indicator. Wiring pinch was tracked down to the wire from the front light, under bonnet just in front of engine. In retrospect I’d just done some work there and may just have disturbed the loom there. I’d spent ages looking around the rear light area...

Friend with multi-meter and a huge amount of knowledge was enlisted, we went back to basics and using the new wiring diagrams traced it to the red and white wires . We then disconnected everything with that wire and then reversed the process until the culprit was found.

Craig normally looks after a rather large mast in Yorkshire so he enjoyed just how lovely and  simple the 7 was.

It’s a think automotive mechanical gauge .  The shroud on the conection was not covering all of the metal . When the new engine was fitted the system needed bleeding, disconnecting the pipe must have caused the bulb holder to move and short put all the dials and right hand side tail and side lights
