Collidog
Have done some searching on here, but cannot be sure if the Caterham QR column is a straight swap for the current fixed boss column? I guess the main issue I am uncertain about is the current steering lock tube. Can the QR column be used with this?Car is 2018 420RThanks a lot
elie boone
The quick release doesn't have the steering lock tube be it's not to much hassle to cut if off the old and weld it to the QR column.
Collidog
thanks for the quick reply. So removing the fixed boss column removes the lock tube? Can the QR column simply be inserted without use of the lock tube?
Jim 123
I believe it can, but the steering lock will not work as you would guess.
paul_w
If you haven't bought one yet, I'm toying with replacing the QR in mine with a standard one, so might be up for a deal if you're interested? Mine's a 2010 car so assuming it's the same part.
Collidog
So if QR column fitted at factory, all other parts (e.g. ignition barrel, steering tube etc) are the same as if the fixed boss column fitted?
Tazio
It's just a quick release mechanism, welded to the top of the inner column, everything is the same, doesn't affect ignition barrel , or the outer column, which I assume you are referring to as the steering tube. Collidog
Thanks. Meant the dash/lock tube. As the QR column has no steering lock section, I had crazy visions of it flapping around in the dash tube, but of course it is held in place with the upper/lower bushes. Assume same with the Rapfix column
Tazio
Yep, , just replaced my Lifeline with the Rapfix one, to overcome the wear on the splines the Lifeline suffers from, though it had given 15 years service lol.
Collidog
Thanks Tazio. The Rapfix isn’t too much more than the Lifeline one. Does the boss only come in the mustard yellow?
ChrisC
For IVA in 2017 I had to remove my quick release column and wheel and fit a Euro spec fixed column and wheel. It was a simple swap, only problem was you have to remove the top bush if you are removing a column with a steering column.
